So, I am a novice at dynasty leagues, so thought i would look for input. I am in the middle of a mini-draft as a new manager. The draft pool is limited to the players and their contracts from the eight teams not returning.
League specifics: 16 teams (only 8 in the mini-draft) $165M salary cap. All positions and we do LF/CF/RF instead of generics. Scoring categories include triples, whip, ops, and holds and a few other randoms.

Believe I said it once before but I am out of my comfort zone with this kind of draft so take my advice for what it is worth.

Not sure what closers cost you but I think that is the route I would go. Rivera being my top choice. In a 16 team league, it is going to be hard to find a closer if you don't get one soon.

You have quite the log jam at the corner IF/OF spots. No one at 2B really stands out to me. You may need to pull off a trade for that spot. I think that Doumit makes a lot of sense for you here. Or if you feel good about it you could go with someone like Matt Harvey (not sure on contract though) & see if either Doumit or Martin fall to the next round. I really like Aoki, Jay & Cain at those costs, but you are already loaded in the OF. Too bad. There could've been some nice bargains here. I also agree that you shouldn't wait too much longer on relievers.

Second Base: Johnson is the best, but that's a sizable amount of money for him.
Third Base: LOVE Lowrie at that money and very little risk overall if he gets hurt (like he tends to do). I like Pacheco a lot too, great in Coors.
Shortstop: I wouldn't pay for any of them, but if you need someone probably Dozier. At least he has a chance at playing time. Andrelton Simmons will take AB from Pastornicky.
Left Field: Aoki, Kubel, Jay, Murphy in that order
Center Field: Definitely not Young or Bourjos, but I like Revere at that money batting second for PHI. I like Cain too but he gets hurt a lot.
Right Field: Ruggiano is solid. Werth is probably worth the investment given how awesome that lineup will be. I'd avoid Duda and Ichiro.
Starting Pitcher: Luebke could be great. I like Davis if he gets a rotation spot. Norris is pretty good but he won't get any W. Minor is worth the risk. DEFINITELY ALEX COBB. DEFINITELY ZACK MCALLISTER. I'd go with Drew Hutchinson, too. Probably Edwin Jackson.
Relief Pitcher: Dunno about the money for each guy, but Putz is reliable, definitely not Wilson. I like Betancourt, Venters, Marshall, Gregerson, Cruz, Broxton, Holland, Casilla.
Prospects: Gary Brown was the first name to jump out at me. Matt Harvey jumped out next (GET MATT HARVEY!). Jake Odorizzi could pitch some and TB does a great job with P prospects. Allen Webster. Jacob Turner maybe.
1. Matt Harvey by a lot 2. Mike Minor, him and Harvey might be the 2 most underrated K arms in MLB 3. Vinnie Pestano, great young closer 4. Justin Morneau, a steal at 3/3 5. Jed Lawrie, a steal at 1/800K 6. Derek Holland 2/3
I would't touch closers like Valverde, Wilson, Rivera, who come with risk. After Pestano, guys like Betancourt, Street, Broxton, Putz nice.

If Harvey is on a 5or 6 yer deal at the minimum (or close to it) then hes a no brainer and shouldve been picked several rounds ago. If for whatever reason thats not the case, some other good values are: SP - Rubby DLR ( I LOVE his potential!), Nicasio (he wil be very very good one day, elite MiLB K:B ratio ), Colby Lewis, Holland, Minor, Cobb, Zach Lee 1B - Morneau, Alonso - although you dont need one 2B - Yuck 3B - dont bother, youve got 3B locked up SS - Alexei OF - Gose, Cain
Basically I would snap up Harvey ASAP, then Gose, and then try to snag Alexei so you can flip either him or Cozart for a 2B. I would wait a few more rounds for other SP since you already have a rotation full of elite talent.
Sorry not an answer for you but rather a question. How are contract set up in your dynasty league? When a players contract expires what process do you go through to give that player another contract?
