Complex keeper/auction league, who would you keep?

Postby Benkei » Wed Dec 12, 2012 2:24 pm

12 teams
5x5 roto - r, rbi, sb, obp, slg x w, sv, era, k/9, whip
23 Active players
14 Hitters: 2 C, 1B, 2B, 3B, SS, MI, CI, 5 OF, U
9 Pitchers (no rp vs. sp distinction but must hit 1200 IP minimum)
$260 preseason salary cap through the draft ($300 during the season)

Up to 10 major league keepers allowed
We also have 5 minor league draft picks that can be held or exchanged to keep minor leaguers from the prior year
I have 10 minor league draft picks thanks to a 2012 midseason fire sale

Pick up to 10 Major league keeper candidates ( * indicates signed to long term contract and would result in $ penalty to drop, # indicates in final year of contract and I have option to extend past 2013 by adding $5/yr to prevent from being free agent in 2014 ):
Doumit - $3
*Santana - $11
#Fielder - $38
Dunn - $7
#Phillips - $20
#M Young - $11
Bonifacio - $16
D Brown - $1
Lorenzo Cain - $6
Markakis - $13
*Kershaw - $21
*Latos - $6
Anibal S - $7
Street - $15
Broxton - $2
F Francisco - $7
Gallardo $27

Pick up to 10 Minor leaguers:
Billy H
G Brown
Taillon
Shelby M
C Martinez
J Paxton
B Peacock

Also, bear in mind that this is going to be a very good free agent year for my league so preserving cash will matter

Thank you in advance!

One thing to bear in mind is that with league setups like this, that are significantly beyond the norm of a standard league, the person who's going to be able to help you most is you. Only you and your leaguemates know the ins and outs, the ebb and flow of your particular league. Who you might be able to snag with a draft pick, a particular player's trade value based on his contract status, that kind of thing.

That being said:

*Santana - $11
*Kershaw - $21
*Latos - $6
Anibal S - $7
#Phillips - $20
Doumit - $3
Broxton - $2

I would keep those and throw the rest back. The low-$ guys offer some upside and would most likely go for more in an auction. 2B is too weak not to want to lock down Phillips even if at $25 he's no longer a steal. You could make a case for extending Fielder at $43 but that seems close to what he'd go for anyway. Again, you know your league better than anyone here. I would consider Gallardo at $27 but that's not saving money and you said that was important.

As far as minor leaguers, this is impossible to answer without knowing the pool of players. For example if you drop one of those guys who could you reasonably expect to get back with the pick? Without knowing particulars, I would be comfortable dropping Brown, Paxon, and Peacock as I don't think they have more than average upside and won't be true impact players.

I agree with everything Lane said above about your structure & our ability to help. I also agree with his advice on the MiLB players. With that said I selected the players that I would keep for the 2013 season based on their prices (contract length and terms withstanding). I agree that 2B is weak and I would target it in the draft. I think that $20 is about right for Phillips. If you feel like there are going to be a couple of alternatives available at a better value then I would release him. Otherwise, I don't have a problem keeping him. I personally would prefer to go into the draft with the money so that I have some more flexibility.

Agree with pretty much what everyone else has said about the league. I think I would still keep Fielder even though his price is probably close to his value. I wouldn't extend him though. I wouldn't extend Phillips either.

As for MiLB, I would just cut Paxton and Peacock. If the pool is pretty shallow then maybe I keep Paxton around but if there is a decent amount of talent available then I would open up the spot in hopes to get something better.

Thanks for the feeback . . . interesting that nobody picked Street, his peripherals were eye popping last season, but I guess the injury concern drags down his value

$15 is a lot for a closer, especially one who gets hurt as much as Street does. I have trouble seeing him going for more than that in the auction.

That dollar value seems very steep to me. I generally don't pay more than $10 for any closer.
