I have both guys, and both may or may not play again this season (or at least for most of this season). Unknown. I am way ahead in saves with my 3 closers, but could use more holds (which is a roto category for us as well). Should I drop Jensen and pick up the best setup guy on the WW given the unknown? Every day counts for the stats, so want to make a quick call even in light of little information.
Also, I have Ortiz on my bench (no DL spots remain). Is he wasting a roster spot at this point? I could get a replacment (like Pedro Alvarez or Rajai Davis) who could fill in as needed when starters rest to maximize offensive categories. Should I drop him?
I suppose that would depend on the stats that you need at this point in the season. If you're well off in power categories without Ortiz, but need some speed, then Davis would be a better replacement. He's currently targeting middle of September and who knows how productive he will be. I would take either Rajai or Alvarez over him right now.
I would probably drag my feet my Jansen a bit until they release some sort of a time line. I would hate for you to drop him if he'll only be out a week. He has not been placed on the DL yet, so I don't believe that the Dodgers know anything. Best case is that he only misses a week or so and you can drop a lesser closer to chase holds.
I agree with Element. If you have to drop one, I'd drop Ortiz. I'm assuming this is not a keeper league (even if it was I'd drop Ortiz). Who you pick up depends on your needs. I personally like Rajai over Alvarez.
It is a keeper league, but you only keep your best 3 guys, and I have at least 5 other players I'd choose to keep ahead of him, so that won't factor into my decision.
I think it depends on whether you really need that bench spot or not. I also have Ortiz sitting on my bench - Lawrie too. I feel like if any of them come back they could be very valuable to me in the playoffs, so I am holding on for now. Jensen, however, I think will be back in a few days.
I could use the bench spot since it's a roto league. I would use it to either add a 'Holds' guy to plug an RP spot while Jensen is out, or I could add an extra offensive player to fill in when somebody has a night off or on a Monday/Thursday when many teams don't play. I think the move would be either to pick up Mujika from STL, who is racking up holds (that's a category for us) or pick up someone like Pedro Alvarez to help with my power nubmers (can get some extra points with more RBIs and HRs).
That's the decision at hand. However, I also have A-Rod on my DL, so in a week or so, Alvarez may not have a spot in my starting lineup...
I am in the same boat as you, my friend. I am in a H2H league with playoffs starting Monday. I've had 2nd locked up for a while now and will have a 2-week match-up against 3rd place, then another 2 week match-up for the finals should I win. That being said, I also have Ortiz and Jansen, as well as Lawrie, with huge questions marks regarding their respective returns. I am facing the same tough questions that you are. I need to win now to continue on obviously, but I also don't want to cut these guys loose for them to come back and beat me in the next few weeks. All 3 guys that will be in the playoffs against me have open DL slots, meaning they could stash whoever I cut away until they are healthy. (We have 1 DL slot per team.) I also have Votto and Tulo coming back soon, so I may need my DL spot for 1 of them for a few days at the beginning of the week to start a full line-up. Decisions, decisions!!
I'm assuming you heard this, but Jansen is to see a specialist on Tuesday and at that point will either be re-activated or shut down for the year. So after a few days, we will know what to do with our boy. Ortiz is a huge question mark that I may just part ways with in the next day or two. I am definitely going to cut Lawrie in the mean time, as hard as that is to do. I just can't afford to tie up bench spots when I will need to be streaming pitchers like my competitor to remain competitive. I feel for you man, and I hope for both our sakes that we get information on these guys' health soon!
