Trade Reyes for Buster, Chapman? WHIR

Postby lyons595 » Mon Aug 06, 2012 8:09 am

UPDATE BELOW!! THANKS!

AN owner in our league is desperate for a SS, and JOse Reyes has been red-hot for me. I am in 1st in our league by quite a bit, and don't need to make a trade, but I am weak at C and would like to add a stud closer for the rest of the way/playoffs. We have discussed a trade but have not formal offers yet. Essentially the deal breaks-down as:

I give: Jose Reyes, Ryan Cook (and possibly Mike Napoli)
I get: Buster Posey, Aroldis Chapman, Mike Aviles (on WW)

ESPN, h2h each, 12 team, 4 RP max, daily roster changes. Cats: standard 5x5 plus OPS, QS. Non-keeper. I stream 1-2 SP weekly so having an elite bullpen is critical!

C Mike Napoli
1B Paul Goldschmidt
2B Jason Kipnis
3B Chase Headley
SS Jose Reyes
OF Michael Bourn
OF Adam Jones
OF Giancarlo Stanton
UTIL Jay Bruce
DL: Joey Votto, Jose Bautista

SP Adam Wainwright
SP Roy Halladay
SP Johnny Cueto
SP stream spot
RP Craig Kimbrel
RP Kenley Jansen
RP Tyler Clippard
RP Ryan Cook

I don't think you have to make this deal with Kimbrel and Jansen in the cog already. PLUS you have Cook all be it, he is in danger of losing his job.

I don't really see you needing to make this deal, but it's not a bad one. Napoli is solid in the context of catchers. Plus your bullpen is already very good. I would absolutely be content with those 4 relievers.

That said, getting Furcal or Aviles is a downgrade from Reyes, but you still get steals, which is most of Reyes' value (at least this year). Posey is an upgrade from Napoli, although Napoli is on a much stronger offensive team, so you may lose some RBIs/Runs just based on that. Chapman is certainly an upgrade over Cook.

If it were me, I'd ask yourself if you're looking to trade just for the sake of trading. The key here is to evaluate if the catcher upgrade offsets the SS downgrade. I think it's pretty close.

I def would not make this deal. Reyes and Napoli are both starting to heat up, so really the only upgrade you would get is Chapman. But you already have Kimbrel and Jansen so I dont really see that as a complete need right now.

If you are in 1st place by a strong margin, then definitely sit tight. Napoli had a monster second half last year, and if he can put up numbers even somewhat close to those again this year then you will be riding into the championship.

Like Chapman and Posey a lot, but I don't think it's worth the losses here. You may see Reyes benefit from Stanton's return tomorrow. Napoli heating up, albeit he has been held out a lot recently due to the quad and whatnot.

My concern with Napoli is that he already shares AB with Young, Moreland, and now Soto. Yes, he's hit a few HR in the last 30, but otherwise he's been bad. Reyes really adds value in Avg, OPS, and SB. I can cover all but the SB with Posey. I have Bourn, A Jones, and Kipnis, Headley, Goldschmidt chipping in to help cover SB.
If I add Chapman, I'd win SV, K, ERA and WHIP every week. Plus as my team gets healthy I'll have plenty of O to win weekly matchups thru the playoffs. My goal is to win 7 of 12 cats... survive and advance!
Thanks for all the input...I'll keep considering the deal!

I'd do that. Posey at catcher is almost more valuable to you than Reyes will be at SS. Someone said Napoli is heating up...that's just not true. He has hit a few homeruns in the last couple weeks but has virtually no other hits. With Chapman closing with no competition he far outweighs Cook.

If you can, keep Napoli out of the trade. I think that gives him enough value to make it not worth it for you. Check how desperate he his for SS with that.

I would do it. Cook is going to lose his job and Buster is playing incredible. Aviles isn't great but that doesn't mean you can't make another deal later or get a hot SS off waiver wire during callups.
