The Blockbuster Strikes Back! WHIR

Postby sigriffey » Thu Aug 02, 2012 12:47 pm

As some of you know, I had a blockbuster offer posed to me that would move some risk in Halalday/Sale for the likes of Cliff Lee and others. Guys that can help me down the stretch for the playoff run. The rub? He wanted Stanton, and we all felt it was too good a keeper to sacrifice.

After waiting it out, he finally sent me this new Blockbuster ... I think it's a win bc I keep Stanton. All systems go? I'd prolly drop Ubaldo at some point just as I would have dropped Marte when DL guys return.

He Gives Me: Cliff Lee, Carlos Beltran, Jason Motte, Jose Bautista and Ubaldo Jimenez

I Trade Him: Roy Halladay, Chris Sale, Adrian Beltre and Starling Marte

(Note that Bautista is not keeper eligible... but neither is my Beltre).

Should I take it?

I probably wouldn't do it, Sale has far more upside than Jimenez and that would be the deal breaker for me. The same goes for Marte and Beltran. I think you have enough assets on your team to make a playoff run when Stanton returns.

This is a really good deal for you... Sale's going through dead-arm and Marte cannot be counted on yet at this point in his career. I'd take Lee over Halladay right now, Bautista over Beltre given when you'd play him, and getting Beltran and Motte makes it even better. Do the deal!

It's decent deal for you. Not a no-brainer like the one yesterday though. This trade improves your hitting more then pitching.

This guy is my best chance to move Halladay and Sale (both of whom I deem somewhat risky for my playoff run) to get a stud like Lee and some great pieces in return.

The alternate deal he sent me that I think is not as good as this one is:

His Beltran, Baustista, A-Rod, Lee and Motte for my Halladay, Sale, Stanton and Beltre

So the thing with the current deal is that I can keep Stanton and basically move Marte for Ubaldo... both of whom I consider droppable if it meant clearing room for an Ortiz or Bautista Dl return.

The Phillies just placed Cliff Lee on waivers, he still could be traded. You might want to let this play out.

Nahh, this is a no-brainer. I didn't read about the other trade. Of course you do this deal.

Adrian Beltre's main value comes from his eligibility at 3B. But you already have the best 3B in the game right now. Your league counts walks so that costs him more value. He's pushing 34. Bye Bye value. Texas' lineup is showing some really ugly signs of aging already (cough Michael young), so that's a loss in value. Basically, you are overvaluing Beltre.

Halladay and Sale are two high risk pitchers. Sure Lee might be traded, but that's good since your league has both Wins and Loss categories, he's probably going to a better team.

Absolutely do this deal. I wouldn't bother with Ubaldo though.

Do I bother countering to get someone other than Ubaldo or do I just take this deal and drop Ubaldo since I'll need to activate Ortiz soon anyway?

I woudn't tinker with it, the trade is damn solid, I would just take a win here and don't second guess. Nice work.

Well, you don't need another pitcher to make this trade worthwhile for you. But if he has someone else, you can always ask. The guy you want is Max Scherzer. I doubt he'll bite though.
