Almost every single player is placed on waivers. It's not a big deal, or even a small deal for that matter. The teams can just pull them back if there's a claim with no repercussions. It's only news if they either clear waivers (and thus can be traded to any team - although even this is a formality for players like Carlos Lee and Alfonso Soriano), or their team starts negotiating a trade with the team that placed the claim.
So Cliff Lee being on waivers means... nothing. Other than there's a non-zero chance that he is traded. But that is true for essentially every single player in baseball.
Would be mighty awesome if the Yankees says "screw you all" and picks up Crawford, Lee, and *da dum* Soriano and make a run to blow everyone out for the World Series title. Luxury tax, forget you, says the Yankees. If you have a $100M+ contract, come join us in NY.
On a more serious note, I don't buy the Yankees bashing their way into a title. They need serious upgrade in their starting rotation. After all, it's CC and then who? It's like Aretha Franklin and the pips. Or Huey Lewis and the Huey'wannabes. Ok, I made the last one up.
