bit the bullet and started Romero when I saw how bad the A's offense was overall

Too many are starting a pitcher that's been just terrible this season, then. I have no confidence in him to throw consistent strikes right now let alone get through a major league lineup without a blowup. Mentally, he's just not in the right place. It reminds me a bit of 2012 Lester except Romero's been even worse than that.
