Marlins dump Hanley on Dodgers

Postby AussieDodger » Wed Jul 25, 2012 3:04 am

http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2012/07/dodgers-acquire-hanley-ramirez-randy-choate.html

The Dodgers have acquired Hanley Ramirez and Randy Choate from the Marlins for Nathan Eovaldi and a minor leaguer, reports Tim Brown of Yahoo! Sports (on Twitter). The minor leaguer is right-hander Scott McGough according to Jon Paul Morosi of FOX Sports, and Dylan Hernandez of The Los Angeles Times says that Miami is not sending any money to the Dodgers (Twitter links).

Wowowowowowowowow :-o
Eovaldi might turn into a reasonable starter, BUT IS THIS ALL THE MARLINS COULD GET?
(shocked)
Please prove them wrong Hanley

They gave up nothing but definitely took on some risk. Hanley has been about a 2.5 WAR player for a couple years now (when he's healthy) and they took on like $40 MM over the next 2.5 years. On the other hand the Dodgers ownership has boatloads of money and he's clearly better than whatever trash they've been throwing out there at SS/3B.

I'm just afraid about what stupidity the Giants will come up with in response.

Hanley was a 4.6 WAR player 2 years ago. Something is wrong with Hanley though. I'm not sure if it's being in Florida and getting out helps or if he has some injury that is bothering him. He's had shoulder issues and that could definitely still be bothering him.

i know, but he's been hurt a lot recently and has never played good defense so unless his hitting rebounds big time (which isn't out of the realm of possibility), he's probably not going to be worth the money.

ouch.
the Marlins just told the Dodgers to put on a dress and dance around. then Miami sat back in the chair with one of them fancy Miami south beach drinks and said yeah like that, dance like that.
if that's all Miami could get, other teams are like wait WTF that's all it took!?

It's amazing what Uncle Ned can do when he has money to spend. The trading of Eovaldi means that there is probably a SP coming in soon too. It won't be Hamels since the Phils have signed him long term, but with the FA market for this upcoming offseason thinning out, I would expect it to be someone under contract for next season (Cliff Lee, Josh Johnson, Matt Garza, etc) unless they also get Dempster crazy cheap.

At least MIA won't be paying, but it's definitely disappointing to see they weren't willing to take on some of his salary and get a better prospect. A better prospect would of given the fans something to look forward to and show that it isn't all about the money. Larry Beinfest (president of baseball operations) actually said yesterday on the FSN Florida broadcast they were still trading to win in the near future, but this definitely looks just like a salary dump.

Amazing that Hanley went from MVP level player to traded for salary relief in just 2 years. As we all know, the Dodgers offense is horrendous outside of Kemp and Ethier and a Hanley bounce back would be huge for the Dodgers. I wish the Mets would have taken this kind of gamble - trading for an overpaid player but still in the prime age of his career but only signed for an additional 2 years. The Marlins are a mess, Hanley should do much better now that he's out of there.

Knowing Hanley's demeanor, I'd wager it's been a 2 year pout. Only chance on regaining any glory is he gets excited about playing ball again but it would appear many in baseball don't think it'll happen given the Marlins lousy return.
