My Crawford/Hamels for J.Upton/Wainwright (Keeper) WHIR

Postby sigriffey » Fri Jul 20, 2012 11:52 am

I've just been offered this deal. Could keep J.Upton thru 2014 as one of my 6 keepers. Love Hamels but was likely going to keep Kershaw as my pitcher keeper. Does this deal ruin my chances for this year? On the cusp of 2nd/1st place buy also trying to think about the future, diversify with all my red sox, etc. Thoughts?

Here's how long these guys can be kept (that is, the season THRU which they can be kept):

J.Upton - 2014
Wainwright - 2013
Crawford - 2014
Hamels - 2014

Well I think I would rather keep Kershaw and Hamels instead of Kershaw and Upton. You are already keeping Braun. Having Kershaw and Hamels already in my rotation is awesome. Just my opinion.

Please help with mine...have those two trades on the table.

Because of Upton's struggles ...this is tough. When speaking 'keeper' talk you should also always side with the hitter. Upton and Hamels have similar value in my eyes and hitters are much more consistent. I do also worry that Upton will get dealt to a pitcher's paradise during the offseason. Though .... he is just 24 and has crazy tools.

I'd probably stay pat, but I couldn't fault you for pulling the trigger either.

This is HIS team ... any good counters come to mind? Would you guys worry that I make him a real threat if I outfit him with Hamels? That's another concern I have...

You can easily take the hit to your rotation and you gain the best player in the deal. Do it.

Just think of it this way, if the 24 year-old phenom known as Justin Upton wasn't slumping right now and was conveniently pounding the living crap out of the ball like we all know he can do, would you be asking about this deal? No. You'd take the superior player and a solid SP and run. Good buy low.

I say stand pat. I feel like your pitching is weaker than your hitting

I'm thinking you don't do that deal. Hamels is good, but over the last 8 starts I think Wainwright has been just as good so that might be a wash. Upton like his brother is streaky. Tons of potential but just can't seem to put it together consistently. I'd stick with what you got and hope Crawford can turn a corner in Boston.
