Drop Jordan Zimmermann for Wainwright or Scherzer?

Postby zyzzbrah34 » Thu Jul 12, 2012 10:50 am

Zimmermann is having a solid year (2.61 ERA, 1.12 WHIP). However, he only has 74 strikeouts and his record is 5-6.

Would he be worth dropping for Wainwright or Scherzer? In my league, I'm in 1st in ERA and 2nd in wins and WHIP, but second to last in strikeouts. Zimmermann is hurting me with the strikeouts, but he's been so good this year in two other categories so I'm not sure what to do.

My league is roto and non-keeper.

I'm having another issue like yours as well. Do you have anyone else you can drop for Wainwright? I can't believe he's a FA.

I'm not sure. Here's my team, what do you think?

Pitchers- Weaver, Cain, Price, Shields (Second most strikeouts on my team), Gallardo, Zimmermann. Relief Pitchers- Rodney, Perez, Street, Cook, Wilhelmsen

I get up to 200 starts and have used 108 which puts me right on pace.

Batters- Buster Posey, Prince Fielder, Brandon Phillips, Brett Lawrie, Ian Desmond, Asdrubal Cabrera, Kevin Youkilis, Jose Bautista, Michael Morse, Corey Hart, Justin Upton, Angel Pagan, Will Middlebrooks, Bench Lance Berkman, DL Troy Tulowitzki

Will post in your thread in a minute

I can't believe you're 2nd to last in Ks with that staff, but even taking that into account I wouldn't drop Zimm for either. Any gain you make in Ks would be offset in a corresponding drop in ERA and WHIP, and with Wainwright there's always the threat of an innings cap coming off TJ surgery, even though one has not yet been established. Plus, it looks like the Nats offense is starting to pick it up as everyone gets healthy, so the wins should come for Zimm in the second half. If anything I'd try to package Zimmermann with one of your extra bats to trade up for an elite pitcher, depending of course on other teams' needs.

I wouldn't drop Zimm.
I would think about adding Wainwright, But would need to see what your team looks like.

Zimmerman is still a quality arm (Could always use him in a trade to get an upgrade elsewhere & then just outright pick up waino) BUT don't plain drop him.

EDIT.

See the roster was posted
Pagan or Berkman would be the players to drop over Zimm...The 200 limit may be rough on you with that staff though.

Definitely don't drop him! Trade him. Who is near last in ERA/WHIP. See if you can target one of their top-K guys.

I agree that I would not drop Zim for Wainwright. You'd be taking too much of a hit in ERA. Can you trade Zim, do a 2 for one and then pick up Wainwright?

By 2 for 1, what type of players are you referring to?

I just proposed 3 different trades (Zimmermann for Bumgarner, Zimmermann and Middlebrooks for Gio Gonzalez, and Zimmermann and Middlebrooks for Cueto) but people in my league don't seem to like trading.

By 2 for 1 I mean you package Zimmerman with another player to upgrade that position. So maybe Zim and Pagan for an upgrade at OF.
