Ellsbury-plus for Trout-plus? (WHIR 100%!)

Postby wazzeus » Wed Jul 11, 2012 3:09 am

If you're the first-place Mike Trout owner and your glaring need is pitching, do you do this?

- OF Jacoby Ellsbury
- SP Mat Latos, Jordan Zimmermann, Lance Lynn, Matt Garza, Ian Kennedy or Josh Beckett
- RP Santiago Casilla, Ernesto Frieri or J.J. Putz

for

- OF Mike Trout
- SS Jhonny Peralta

Or do you possibly do this?

- SP Madison Bumgarner
- RP Santiago Casilla, Ernesto Frieri or J.J. Putz
- OF/3B Trevor Plouffe, OF Dayan Viciedo, OF Dexter Fowler, OF Ben Revere, OF Wil Myers or 1B/3B Michael Young

for

- OF Mike Trout

If it seems like I'd be giving up a lot for Trout, it's because it's an indefinite keeper league. Ellsbury will be 30 in two years and is likely to be headed out of Boston next year, while Trout still has at least a decade of dominance in him. This year, I have the players to cover for any losses, so depth is no concern.

Any feedback appreciated.

You are giving a lot in my opinion but if you were to do it I would give up Beckett and Casilla with Ellsbury to get Trout and Peralta. I still do like the trade a bit though since you can keep players for however long you want so you would have Trout for a long time and you are right Ellsbury is 10 years older then him and Trout holds more value. Plus Ellsbury is very injury prone too... The more I type the more I start to like the trade for you especially if you are able to only give up Beckett and Casilla with them. You may have to give a better closer though and possibly a better pitcher or Lance Lynn since he is young and this is a keeper. I just actually re read your post and if I were an owner of Trout and my glaring need was pitching I would want Latos (Better second half pitcher) and Bumgarner and Ellsbury for Trout and someone else.

People are over valuing Tout... he has been the best fantasy player since his call up and he is unbelievable do not get me wrong but what I posted above is about the value I would give up Trout for... I think it is too much for you to give up. Bumgarner is only 22 and is a stud in himself and Latos is only 24.

All in all if I was the Trout owner I would not do the trades you said but I would do the Ellsbury, Bumgarner, and Latos trade if I needed pitching.

Hope this wasn't all jumbled and and was a little helpful... any questions about anything I said just ask.

It doesn't look like you are giving up a lot to get Trout in either of those deals.

Deal 1 - Ellsbury + Latos/Zimmerman + Semi-Average Closer = Not enough IMO.

Who knows how Ellsbury is going to do once he comes back. His 2011 stats were considered lucky by many and the power to be way over his head. Latos and Zimmerman are both good pitchers, but they are not ACE pitchers or top tier SP keepers. The closers you listed are okay, but it isn't like any of them are Papelbon/Kimbrel/Jansen types (guys with huge K numbers).

Deal 2 - Bumgarner + Semi-Average Closer + Young Hitters with some upside (aside from Myers, but he isn't in MLB yet) = Not enough IMO.

Bumgarner is a legit ace, but the other stuff you are offering isn't that jaw dropping. Same, okay closers. The hitters here are all young and have some upside but not superstar upside IMO (aside from Myers, but he isn't playing, so who knows).

Honestly, if I had Trout in an indefinite keeper league I would be looking for something like Bumgarner + Ellsbury + 2 of those closers. Anything else and I would immediately hit reject, especially if I was already in 1st.
