Totally agree. Even if the hometown player isn't a prototypical slugger, everyone loves an underdog -- especially a hometown underdog. Seemingly every season, some musclehead goes 0-fer or 1-fer in the derby. Butler easily could have outhomered Kemp and certainly Cano this year. Someone mentioned Altuve. I don't think it's a stretch to say even he could have hit one or two out.
Besides, it's not like the guys who are in the derby are THE top home run hitters in baseball. If they went purely by the numbers, we'd have seen Adam Dunn, Josh Hamilton, Ryan Braun, Edwin Encarnacion, Curtis Granderson and Jay Bruce this year. I don't think anyone would have batted an eye if Butler hit in place of, say, Trumbo, not that he wasn't deserving.

So, I get that a meme is a humorous picture with text, but where did the name come from? I'd never heard of it until Hort started posting them left and right (to everyone's delight!).

Wikipedia wrote:The word meme is a shortening (modeled on gene) of mimeme (from Ancient Greek μίμημα Greek pronunciation: [míːmɛːma] mīmēma, "something imitated", from μιμεῖσθαι mimeisthai, "to imitate", from μῖμος mimos "mime")[4] and it was coined by the British evolutionary biologist Richard Dawkins in The Selfish Gene (1976)[1][5] as a concept for discussion of evolutionary principles in explaining the spread of ideas and cultural phenomena. Examples of memes given in the book included melodies, catch-phrases, fashion and the technology of building arches.[6]
Also, since I'm allowed to vent in here, I'm going to continue pouting about Stanton still being on the active roster. Here we are several days post surgery and one day from the start of the second half, and he's still not on the DL. I want to make a pickup you A-holes!!!

Interesting, and thanks for the explanation. When did it become popular to use the term to describe these humorous pictures with text on the internet? There are all sorts of internet phrases that I'm not familiar with. i guess this is just the latest example of such phrases.

JTSluggers used to post them all the time in General Talk, 3, 4, 5 years ago, and they really didn't get any response. I thought they were so lame and stupid. Now I think they're hysterical. JTSluggers was a pioneer.

dude, i think its pretty obvious that Miami is not going to officially place him on the DLuntil sometime on Friday, likely a few hours before game time. what incentive do they have for doing it any sooner?
