Considering trading Verlander. WHIR!!!

Postby bjmacdow » Thu Jun 28, 2012 1:14 pm

Considering a trade in which I give up Justin Verlander to get Yu Darvish, Ernesto Frieri and Anthony Rizzo. I would drop Carlos Quentin and Furbush to make room. Please provide your thoughts and leave a link. WHIR! Thanks a bunch.

My team (keep in mind it is an 8 team league and everyone is stacked):
C: Carlos Ruiz
1b: Paul Goldschmidt
2b: Michael Cuddyer
3b: Adrian Beltre
SS: Starlin Castro
OF: Alex Rios
OF: Jose Bautista
OF: Justin Upton
Util: Melky Cabrera
Util: Adam Jones
BN: Josh Reddick
BN: Rafael Furcal
BN: Carlos Quentin
BN: Jose Altuve (d2d), usually have him at 2nd Cuddyer at 1st
DL: Jonathan Lucroy (hoping he gets healthy to use in trade)

Closer: Jim Johnson
Closer: Tyler Clippard
Closer: JJ Putz
Closer: Tom Wilhelmson
P: Charlie Furbush (trying to get cheap wins)
P: Sergio Romo (trying to get cheap wins/saves)
SP: Jered Weaver
SP: Roy Oswalt
SP: Justin Verlander
SP: Matt Cain
DL: Ryan Dempster

I would say no for two reasons. One is that I am not sure that you really need Frieri given that you have four closers already. They may not all close by season's end, but that's still pretty good to have right now. Second is that Rizzo may or may not hit the ground running and, thus, may not be that much of an upgrade over Quentin.

However, if this is a keeper/dynasty league then getting Rizzo and Darvish would be sharp moves. That might change my mind.

I agree with this. JV is the best pitcher in baseball IMO. You should get more. You don't need another closer.

This is not a good deal for you, as Verlander is one of few pitchers who should fetch an enormous price. Top 10 in the yahoo game, and top 15 in most rankings. To only get a much lesser pitcher, although a good one, plus a closer and a rookie just isn't quite enough.

I would not give up Verlander unless I recieved an offer I couldn't refuse. This offer is not one of those. Keep Verlander.
