Big Trade: Beltran & Wainwright for Verlander

Postby saur kraut & footbal » Wed Jun 20, 2012 10:33 pm

I'm sitting in 3rd place in my pay league, and I'm getting pummeled in the pitching categories (most losses, fewest wins). Drafting Lincecum and Wainwright as your aces will do that.

My lineup:

C: Buster Posey
1B: Gonzo
2B: Cano
3B: ARam
SS: Aviles
CI: Lawrie
MI: D.Gordon
LF: Hamilton
CF: Pagan
RF: Beltran
OF: Quentin
UTIL: Swisher
Bench: Morse
Bench: Middlebrooks
Bench: Furcal
Bench: Hosmer

SP: Lincecum
SP: Price
SP: Myers
RP: Robertson
RP:Nathan
RP: Frieri
P: Venters
P: Putz
P: Strop
Bench: Lindblom
Bench: Wainwright
Bench: Cueto
DL: Beachy (gone for season)

Is trading Beltran and Wainwright for Verlander worth it? Wainwright has been pitching pretty well as of late, and Beltran is putting together one of his best years, but both are big injury risks. I'm pretty solid in the OF (RF) with Morse, Swisher, and Quentin who are all RF-eligible, so I won't be left with a gaping hole in the lineup if I trade away Beltran.

So, what say you? Good deal? Is there a reasonable counter offer you can see packaged in my lineup for Verlander?

Thanks!

I really like Wainwright for the remainder of the season, I don't think he's an injury risk. He had the Tommy John surgery, life goes on. It's not a bad trade by any means, but I really don't think it makes you a whole lot better for pitching. Better, but not enough to catch up probably. I'd see if you could get Verlander for Beltran and Hosmer instead, that helps you more. Or shop around Beltran and Hosmer for a different ace.

I agree with the last post. I think Wainright will be fine second half of the season, so will Verlander give you a WHOLE lot more than Wainright........ Maybe. I would try another avenue where you aren't giving up Wainright. You need to keep potential aces, try to send a couple bats to improve your pitching.

Help with mine? viewtopic.php?t=449282

See ... and I actually feel the opposite. I don't really have him labeled as an injury concern, but after not throwing last season you can bet that he is going to fatigue at some point this season. Beltran is an injury concern to me. IMO, you're giving up 1 top 50 player (Beltran) & adding a top 20 player. It's a no brainer to me.

I posted earlier on another thread that I dealt HanRam last year for 4 players and won the league because of the depth/holes they filled. Would you consider dealing Beltran/big bat for maybe not 1 ace, but 2-3 (or whatever combo) solid SP. I agree, Verlander alone over Wainwright isn't a big enough jump. But you just need solid SP depth to make up for Lincecum, etc sucking.

Thanks for all the input guys! I tweaked the trade and ended up getting it accepted - here's what's pending right now:

I give up: Beltran, Lincecum, Venters

I get: Verlander

I agree that giving up Wainwright when he just appears to be turning the corner might not be in my best interest, so I went back to dangling Lincecum (whom I initially wanted to get rid of + Beltran for Verlander, but he countered with Wainwright) and adding Venters. I have plenty of set-up guys, so tossing in Venters doesn't cost me much in terms of Holds.
