Make This Trade? - WHIR

Postby jbird669 » Thu Jun 14, 2012 8:19 am

I'm in a 12-team 5x5 keeper league with a $260 in-season cap. I've fallen from first place in April to 8th, mainly due to injuries. I've been offered Dan Haren $23, for Freddie Freeman $8. If I keep Freeman next year his salary doubles, and Haren will be $24. I've had injuries to all but 1 starter and I have Edwin Encarnacion who qualifies at 1B in my league for $1 (would be $2 if I kept him). Should I make this deal? The team with Haren is in last by a good margin.

I think you would have to post your entire roster to see if this deal makes sense. I think that the deal is fairly even for the rest of this year, and that both guys are borderline in terms of their 2013 keeper prices. However, I almost never advise trading offense for pitching unless your offense can definitely sustain the loss. I think a lot of people underestimate the loss of a bat and overestimate the addition of a big game pitcher (even a true fantasy ace, which Haren is not). This usually spells disaster.

But if you post your entire roster, it will give a better picture in terms of your replacement value offensively for Freeman (Encarnacion replaces Freeman, but who replaces Encarnacion at UTIL as he is surely in your starting lineup). Also, what are the timetables of return on your guys who are injured, what other starters do you have, etc.

Also, a general idea of where you are in the standings (I assume this is roto by the description) may help figure out if the jump in points in the pitching categories will be worth your loss in offense.

I think your lineup can certainly sustain the loss of Freeman, and Haren would be a nice addition to your staff. There isn't much dropoff from Freeman to Encarnacion, and Haren upgrades your staff quite a bit, so I'd recommend pulling the trigger.

Help me out?

I like this trade, may be a bit biased because I have Haren but he's been a great arm for my pitching. He hasn't gotten much run support, but he's pitched quality starts.

Help?
