I just got offered a deal in my roto keeper league.
I was offered Carlos Santana for Mark Trumbo.
I don't think I need to get in to specifics of the league since both players play 1B. While Trumbo also qualifies for 3B and OF, Santana is primarily a catcher.
On the surface this looks like a great deal for me. I am in a huge sell high mode for trumbo. On draft day I never could have pulled this off.
What's everyone's opinion...is Trumbo the real deal and next elite bat at 1B or is Santana still the guy who could be the top hitting catcher in baseball?
While Santana provides me a great bat at a premium position. I don't want to ship off the next big thing in Trumbo.
Well Trumbo having 3b elgibility is money IMO. I'd keep him, but with some shifting giong on and some good options gaining 3b eligibility there is SOME depth there but everyone needs to be healthy though.
The best there is, the best there was, and the best there ever will be!
I'm actually in a good situation when it comes to 3B, I have Longo on my bench right now as he is about to start re-habbing and I have Prado as well. I am a die hard Indians fan and when I watch Santana, I'm not in love with him. His average scares me and I think I get more value from Trumbo. But what leans me towards the deal is the ability to add what is presumably one of the top hitting catchers in baseball. Pre-draft I would take this in a heartbeat. But watching Trumbo murder pitchers night after night is causing me to believe that he may be the safer play. At the end of the day, both players upside outweigh's their downside. I have solid depth at 3B, but not so much at 1B (Adam LaRoche is all I have behind Trumbo). Although I have no depth at catcher with only AJ Ellis on my roster. Thanks for the input guys.
I'd still keep Trumbo despite the latest offer. Santana has only reached 500 ABs once is his entire career, minors and majors combined. He simply can't stay healthy and that's a bi-product of the position he plays more than anything. In my mind he's an above average catcher at this point in his career. Both players are 26, but as a catcher Santana has already taken twice the wear and tear that Trumbo has in the field. Trumbo's ceiling is much higher and I think we have already seen Santana's. I think your feeling about him being a die hard Tribe fan is also relevant. I'm a hudge O's fan and if we were talking about Weiters here I wouldn't be making this offer to you, ya know. I believe Weiters has great value, and as a Cathcer he would rank closer to Trumbo right now than Santana. Mike Socia is an excellent talent evaluator and the Angels record over his managerial career is indicative of that. Socia has literally bent over backwards to get this kid into the lineup as often as possible over the past two years...and he's a hard man to please, so that tells me that Trumbo is something special and you don't have to look any further than his own manager to figure that out. He's going to be a star for the next 5 years in the Angels organization. Between him and Trout the Angels are stacked with young talent. I only wish I could get their scouting staff to domy fantasy draft for me every year! lol
