Weighing Trades.... Advice? WHIR

Postby sclyon3 » Sat Jun 02, 2012 7:44 pm

I am in a 10-team non-keeper H2H league. I am in 2nd place by half a game, with a large gap between 3rd place. The team that is in first is all hitting; my team dominates in pitching. We played last week and tied 6-6. I am considering stacking up certain categories (say R and SB) so that when I match up against him, I will beat his pitching and then take 2 out of the 6 hitting cats. Or I could just sit tight for a while and see where the next few months take us. It's just a thought I have been entertaining... Anyway, two scenarios I am weighing:

1) The trade I am considering would send Miggy, Big Papi, Michael Bourn, and Howie Kendrick for Hanley Ramirez, Ian Kinsler, and Josh Hamilton. I am considering taking Hamilton out of the equation and loading up more on SB and R and then keeping Bourn. Miggy and Papi for Kinsler and HanRam? I feel that I may be giving up too much, but it may make my TEAM better. I am divided.

2) I am also determining how much I can give up for Chapman. (The other person needs SP help, which I can offer.) How much is too much to have 2 dominant closers on my team? I can obviously spare some starting pitching, but I don't want to give up too much just to get a closer. Who would represent an equal value in return that would still make my team better with Chapman?

Either trade would be with a team not really in contention at this point (5th and 7th place and way behind 3rd and 4th). Here is my line-up:

C Avila
1B Miggy
2B Kendrick
SS Reyes
3B E5
IF Dee Gordon
OF Bourn
OF De Aza
OF Reddick
OF Craig
Util Ortiz
DL Jennings (will go to OF with Allen Craig --> IF upon reactivation)

SP: Kershaw, Felix, Price, Lynn, Capuano, McDonald, Beachy, Wandy R., Johan, Peavy
RP: Kimbrel

Categories: R HR RBI SB Avg OPS K W Sv ERA WHIP K/BB

Any help/advice on how to solidify my team going forward would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Hey Thanks alot for responding to mine.

After looking at your team i can clearly see why your in second place. the only downside to your team is that you have guys who are really performing on a level that wasnt expected going into the year so them keeping it up is a bit of a question mark ( really your OF)

Your SP is just flat out amazing so if i was you i would really look to keep miggy if possible and try to deal one of your OF who is overperforming a bit like allan craig and combo him with one of your top pitcher and see if you can land hamilton and possbly chapman.

something like
Kershaw and craig
for
Hamilton and Chapman

You might have to add another small piece but you would still have 4-5 above average to elite pitchers, 2 elite closers as well as a nice balanced hitting with arguable 2 of the top 5 if not top 3 hitters in the game right now

PS who is e5 lol

As to that other piece i know you said your not the biggest fan of jennings so get a feel for how your trade partner values him so you might be able to add him to the deal and get back an Average to Above average pitcher depending how much the other guy values him.

Oops my bad. I meant Edwin Encarnacion by E5- a.k.a. another guy that presumably fits your (very accurate) description of my hitters (over-performing!!)

I definitely see what you're saying and that's a great point about possibly moving a pitcher for a more consistent, proven hitter. I have gone back and forth. One thing I don't want to do is go from being dominant in one thing to be competitive in other categories; I'd rather dominate ones that I "should" win every week so that my team is more consistent. But like you said, I have several dominant pitchers. Another closer would be nice though so I can win saves against more teams.

Also, I think I did a poor job of explaining this, but each of my trade scenarios is with a different team (i.e. Kinsler, Hamilton, Ramirez are on one team and Chapman is on another). Otherwise your idea sounded great! haha How does that change your opinion? (since I can't do a package deal) I would love to keep Cabrera (I'm a die-hard Tigers fan) and still upgrade offensively, but I recognize that my team needs some people that will be hitting in September and not just in May and June. Miggy and Ortiz are proven; I need more depth.

Thanks for your input. Let me know if you have any other ideas! (including your thoughts on "E5") :-)

I would package Wandy Rodriguez and Josh Reddick for an elite speedster/power OF on the level of Bourn. I would look to go after IDK someone like Jacoby Ellsbury and stash him away. Wandy is too up and down and the rest of your arms = money in the bank.

Good looking team! With a pitching corp like that, I'd probably just let your league know that you're willing to move pitchers for OF, and see what the best offer you get is You never know how other people will value a certain player, so giving them the flexibility to choose who they value the highest could net you a better player.
