SOMEONE DROPPED ELLSBURY!

Postby Martain » Sat May 26, 2012 1:48 pm

Ok, someone in my "jelly beans" league dropped Jacoby Ellsbury (AWESOME!), YESTERDAY, someone dropped Eric Hosmer. Obviously I want to put in a claim on both, but Hosmer goes eligible a day before Ellsbury. Right now I have the #3 Waiver priority, if I were to get Hosmer, i would drop to #12 by the time Ellsbury's wavier period ends.

I'm assuming the right thing to do here is pass on Hosmer (hoping that #1 or #2 grab him and I move up a spot) and go after Ellsbury. My conundrum is my this method there is a very real chance I end up with neither guy---if i pass on Hosmer someone else will probably claim him, then if 1 or 2 claims Ellsbury I won't get either. I think its worth the risk because Ellsbury is a top 20 guy, Hosmer is hit and miss thus far.

Any other ideas?

Thanks for the help on mine.

I would go for Hosmer. Ellsbury probably won't slip through, but I can't guarantee that. And when does he come back? End of June? July? I'd take 4 months of Hosmer over 3 months of Ellsbury, and that assumes he comes back.

Votto is my 1B, and i REALLY need SP. Right now I have 5 OF (A. Jones, C. Young, BJ Upton, McCutchen, & Harper). The guy that has Cole Hamels and Strasburg wants to trade one of them for Upton/Harper. So if I get Ellsbury, I may end up with 2 top 25 guys and only having to give up BJ Upton/Harper (its a non-keeper league).

Does that change your opinion at all? I could use the power numbers if Hosmer goes off (like last summer).

Does not change my opinion. It's still 4 months of Hosmer for 3 (?) months of Ellsbury, assuming he comes back on time in early July. And it's a good thing Ellsbury has not had a history of coming back slowly from injuries otherwise I'd go even stronger for Hosmer (actually, he does have such a history), and the Sox will not rush Ellsbury back if they are completely out of the race.

Thanks. i think you're making me agree.

Plus, if #1 or #2 claim Hosmer, I'll just move up a spot to get Ellsbury instead. That's a hell of a consolation prize.

Thanks for the help on mine. Really wondering values for trading in your league if people are dropping players like Hosmer and Ellsbury. If you're going to make a deal with one of your OF's, not sure picking up Hosmer is going to help you much. Are the guys that have waiver claims above you active? It sounds like Ellsbury is more of a need for you if you're going to trade for SP with an OF, especially since you already have Votto at 1B. Are the guys above you buddies? Can you gauge what they might be doing, if they want to pick up these guys?

its a yahoo pro league with random strangers. The league is normally active, but I can't believe that ANYONE in a "pro" league would actually drop either of these guys instead of just benching them. I got up to #3 waivers because of drops like this, I was always too low to grab any of them. Waiver priority in baseball usually doesn't mean a thing, but in this league you never know who is going to become available (its awesome/ridiculous).

I think i have a very good chance to grab one of the two, but not both. I also looked and they both are available at the same day, so its a matter of who do I want more.

If I trade 2 OF for 2 Pitchers (trying to do C.Young/Harper/Fister for Strasburg/Bauer, and I have Daniel Hudson coming off DL tomorrow), I'll need someone immediately to put in my UT, which is why I'm leaning towards Hosmer. I can put Dee Gordon in the other, he's on my bench. I just want to get away from streaming, because SP seems to be at a premium in this league, yet offense is readily available.

I was originally going to say that at #3 you probably wouldn't get either but the more I think about you are in a real good position to get Hosmer if both the guys ahead of you covet Ellsbury. #1 knows he can have either WW claim, it's his choice alone, and #2 (providing he prefers 3 months of Ellsbury) might pass on Hoss hoping #1 burns his priority. IMO you are much less likely to get Ells in your position than you are Hoss. If both guys passed on Hoss it was likely due to them 'outsmarting' each other to nab Ells and both will submit a claim. Take your shot at Hoss, if you miss you still hold a slim shot at Ells, which is all you likely have now. caveat-if you are a gambling man (and prefer 3?Ells vs 4Hoss - I don't) you could figure in the likely hood one or both of those guys have Memorial Day weekend outdoor plans?

To me it depends on the teams ahead, have they made a lot of waiver pickups, do they adjust their teams each day, if so i would say hos for sure but if there is inactivity on their rosters i would take the gamble for ellsbury

just from experience i generally go for both with situations like this. Heck chances are you dont get either. Saving your waiver priority by passing Hosmer might screw you out of both guys.
