Jaime Garcia - WHIR

Postby pungent » Fri May 25, 2012 12:20 am

Where do you put your value on Jaime Garcia? Is he on the cusp of becoming a top 25 pitcher with potential to involve to top 15 in the future?

I'm little curious because I haven't really done research on this kid yet, but he's definitely an intriguing guy.

I have an offer on my table that I respectfully declined where I would send;

Garcia and Utley.

I could use Utley when/if he comes back and all I'll need Utley for is for playoff time as I created some early separation.

I'm from St. Louis and am a huge Cardinals fan so I know some about Garcia. Garcia definitely has the potential to be one of the best lefthanders in the game and showed that two years ago and even had solid numbers last year. The problem with him is that mentally he isn't there yet. As soon as things (ie errors, homeruns, bad calls by the umpire) don't go his way he loses it on the mound and will just throw the ball up there for the hitters to hit and this is usually what leads to his bad starts. When things do go his way and hes mentally focused you get what he gave his last start. So its a matter of whether you think hes going to get it together and string together quality starts or not. He also hasn't shown to go deep into games but has been better about it since his rookie season.

I think he can be a top 25 pitcher but I don't see him moving into the top 15 at any point. He has good stuff but I don't see him ever becoming a borderline Ace which is usually what top 15 pitchers are. I probably would have done the Morales deal. I am not a big fan of Morales and I don't know how he is going to hold up over a full season after being gone for so long.

Yeah that is a maturity issue that is best handled by a good pitching coach away from the park in practice or in mentoring sessions. I think I would stand pat.

I would have taken the offer as I'm not a Morales fan either. That being said, don't overvalue Garcia at this point right now. As an owner, I can say that he definitely has his ups and downs, but he's nothing that outstanding right now. He's playing on a good team so he can get you wins, as seen in previous years, but he still has some maturing to do.
