Really tough Commissioner issue, Andy Pettitte

I am the commissioner of my league and have a unique situation that I am not sure how to deal with. I'm trying to do what's right, but I will inevitably piss someone off.

Here's the timeline of events:

Manager 1 drafted Andy Pettitte before Pettitte was in the Yahoo! system. I couldn't roster Pettitte, and after entering everyone's teams, I sent out this email to my league:

"Also, Andy Pettitte is not in the Yahoo! system yet, so he'll be manually added to [Manager 1's] roster when possible. Or, [Manager 1] has the option of dropping the replacement (Phil Coke) for a different player."

On April 22, Manager 1 dropped Phil Coke and added Jhonny Peralta.

On April 30, Manager 2 dropped Brandon McCarthy and added Andy Pettitte.

Pettitte has pitched twice since Manager 2 picked him up:

On May 13, Pettitte pitched 6.1 innings, giving up 7 hits, 4 earned runs, 2 homeruns, walking 3 and striking out 2 in the loss.

On May 18, Pettitte, pitched 8.0 innings, giving up 4 hits, 0 earned runs, walking 1 and striking out 9 in the win.

On May 19, Manager 1 asked me to add Pettitte to his roster.

Some other things:
-Phil Coke is an inside joke in our league, so I arbitrarily picked him as a replacement player because I needed to fill Manager 1's roster after our offline draft.
-Manager 1 is a Yankee fan and clearly knew that Pettitte was pitching in the bigs when he started pitching in the bigs.
-I realize that I fucked up as commissioner by not adding Pettitte immediately when he became available.
-Manager 1 asked me if Pettitte was available yet, before he joined the Yanks. After that, he said nothing until May 19.
-Manager 2 thinks it's horse shit if he loses Pettitte.
-Manager 1 thinks it's horse shit if he doesn't get Pettitte.

What to do???

As far as I'm concerned, Manager 2 gets the stats from the two games where he had Pettitte, as it's just too hard to go back and make dynamic multi-dimensional changes like that (and it was probably an innocent mistake). Manager 1 gets Pettitte going forward and Manager 2 can either pick up the guy he dropped for Pettitte (if still available) or get a free transaction at an FA of his choice. Manager 2 can be pissed if he wants, but it was made clear at one point and he needs to respect the process and accept his mistake. Manager 2 didn't even notice until after the second start, so he shouldn't be allowed/able to complain over "spilled milk" on the previous starts IMO, and should be more than happy with what I believe a fair decision to award him AP.

I would agree. In this league, when he dropped Phil Coke, he really dropped Andy Pettite.

I agree with the majority here. It is in writing, he gets Coke/Petitte or can drop Coke to get a different player. Does your league have any precedents in a manner like this? If so, I always follow unwritten precedence when rules are unclear.

Seems clear cut to me. If you sent out an e-mail saying Coke=Pettitte, how is this even an issue?

As an aside, if youre going to use placeholders it should be someone who wont contribute at all. Coke contributes. I cant imagine getting some K's and a W AND still being able to retain Petitte. That might sound crazy to some and can say "its just Phil Coke" but in many deeper leagues hes very usable. It should be someone whos not going to play at all (a minor leaguer down so far, retired player, etc). This tangent's not really relative to the issue I know..

Back to original point - rights were given up to petitte when peralta was added as many others have said. Coke WAS Petitte. The owner dropped Petitte for Peralta.

Its pretty open and shut, though Im sure the former petitte owner has some regrets and will be upset
