what is generally thought of as the max a closer can pitch in consecutive games? does it go by pitch count or innings or just a common sense combo of both?
I've got papelbon and he's pitched three days in a row. 34 pitches total, which isn't high, but the fact that they're three days in a row makes me think he will unavailable if they have a save situation. I'm not sure I know the standard limits. I would guess something like the following would put a closer on the bench the next day. This seem reasonable?
1 outing of 25+
2 consecutive outings of 20+ (total)
3 consecutive outings of 30+ (total)

The Brewers sent Cordero out there like 5 days in a row once, but that was with Yost as the manager and he is one of the worst in baseball. It is pretty rare to see more than 3 in a row.

if a closer goes 3 days in a row, it's very unlikely he will pitch a 4th regardless of how many pitches he threw.
if a closer goes 2 days in a row and throws a lot of pitches, I would think he wouldn't go a 3rd.
Thats a solid summary of the normal handling
