Help at 5th Starter?

Postby rickjamess » Mon Apr 30, 2012 12:24 pm

I have the following rotation:

F. Hernandez
C. Lee (DL)
J. Hellickson
B. Beachy
Luebke
S. Marcum
Open Bench Spot

I am considering picking up Joe Saunders and dropping Marcum, but I can't decide. Both are two star pitchers this week. And sinceI have an open roster spot I am also considering picking up Hammel and putting him on the bench and see how he performs this week against NY and BOS.

Should I drop Marcum for Saunders this week, and if not, should I pick up Saunders or Hammel for my bench. Also available are T. Lilly, C. Capuano.

Don't drop Marcum, put Saunders on your bench. If Hammel performs well this week, try and grab him.

I agree.. keep marcum, add saunders.

Keep an eye on hammel, but don't hold your breath. I'm not a big hammel believer.. he's been pretty average (to below average) throughout his entire career. Since 2006 he's never had an era under 3.4 (3.42 was his best to be exact, in AAA, after that 4.33 was next best). 4.5 to 5 looks to be his average. And his k/9 has hovered around 6. xFIP averages somewhere around 4.5.. which does fluctuate yearly, but 4.5 is always below average.

This hot start is just too good for me to believe he's a completely different pitcher. Maybe he is.. I hope so, like to see guys doing good when not expected. But I see him going back to his old ways soon.

Saunders and Hammel are not as good as they've performed thus far. Not even close. Lilly and Capuano are much better options going forward.

I agree with the rest, keep Marcum, add Saunders and Lilly if you can. If you can only add one then go with Lilly. Hammel and Saunders are pitching over their heads right now.
