Thoughts on Trevor Cahill?

Postby Shiti Field » Thu Apr 26, 2012 3:35 am

I targeted Cahill as a decent bounceback draft pick, primarily because I assumed he'd be healthier this year, plus he's moving from the AL to the NL (despite Chase Field being more of a hitters park than Oakland). However, fangraphs says Cahill's velocity is way down from 2010 during his breakout year (avg of 90 mph sinker in 2010, while 87.9 in 2012).

Is this a case of him just needing to build up his arm strength or is he damaged goods at this point? Should Cahill owners be patient with him or is this what he's going to be going forward?

High WHIP, Low K's....he's a better real life pitcher than fantasy pitcher. The drop in velocity is always a concern but for these sinker ball pitchers it's not the end of the world and sometimes even better for them as they get more sink at lower velocities. I'm not a fan of him for fantasy purposes though.

Pretty much right on the head with this. He'll carry some value as a spot starter, but not much else.
