K/BR question

Postby Izenhart » Wed Apr 25, 2012 4:16 pm

Does anyone have access to the current stats list of the top 100 strikeout-per-baserunner pitching ratios that they can post?

And for anyone else how valuable of a stat do you feel it is when evaluating talent?

I would think you are adding in a ton of noise to the evaluation. I would stick with K:BB which is one of the best "simple" ratios you will find for evaluating a pitchers effectiveness.

That's a salty question. (Kudos if anybody can figure that one out)

Anyway, you're essentially talking about (K/9)/(WHIPx9). Which seems like a lot of work to do for something that's not very useful. There's a big difference between a HR, a bloop single, and a walk. They should be treated differently. To evaluate talent I'd look at SIERA as the most basic and simple way to quantify how good a pitcher is and what you can expect his ERA to be. It stablizes very quickly and isn't really affected by luck elements such as LOB% or BABIP. I'd also look at K% and BB% (and K/BB). Pretty much all of your statistical needs can be satisfied by using the Leaders tab on Fangraphs.
