Which FA's to pick up? WHIR

Postby Lenny6 » Tue Apr 24, 2012 5:41 pm

12-team H2H CBS points keeper league I can pick up a couple of players to replace Dempster (DL) and Jurrjens (minors) on my roster. My team:

C - M.Montero ($8/3 keeps left)
1B - E.Hosmer ($3/3)
2B - R.cano ($20/0)
3B - P.Sandoval ($13/2)
SS - Y.Escobar ($3/3)
OF - M.Holliday ($26/3)
OF - A.McCutchen ($9/1)
OF - G.Stanton ($3/3)
DH - B.Butler ($5/3)
B - A.Dunn ($7/3)
B - M.Moustakas ($5/2)
B - D.Espinosa ($3/3)
B - B.Belt ($4/3)

SP - F.Hernandez ($47/3)
SP - Z.Greinke ($38/3)
SP - I.Kennedy ($8/1)
SP - T.Lilly ($9/3)
P - M.Buehrle ($7/2)
P - E.Jackson ($4/3)
RP - J.Valverde ($5/2)
B - M.Leake ($5/2)

DL - R.Dempster ($12/3)
Minors - J.Jurrjens ($8/2) M.Rendon, T.Skaggs, M.Perez

Free agent pickups have an $8 salary and can be kept for up to 3 years. $3 is the minimum salary (Hosmer, Escobar, Stanton, Espinosa are at the minimum). All players will go up $2 in salary if I keep them. Which 2 would you pick (or more if you see somebody on my roster I should drop)?

C.Headley - 3B is not a need, but if he is the highest scoring FA bat and could allow me to trade him, Mous or Sandoval
M.Aviles - I like his 2B/3B/SS elig
R.Detwiler - Top scoring FA pitcher, but does he keep his job much longer?
B.Arroyo - Looks like he is rebounding from awful season and has two starts next week
D.Smyly - Impressive looking youngster
W.Chen - Not sure about him long term in the AL East, but he's been pretty good so far
G.Balfour - I could trot out a 2nd RP if none of the SP options grab your attention
K.Jansen - Points are given for holds and will rack up the K's

Leave a link and I will help in return! Thanks!

how do you start both papa grande and jansen with only one RP position?

don't mess with headley with pablo at 3B. as a giants fan, i watch almost all of pablo's ABs and i think he'll exceed his 2009 performance. he's got his mojo back and he's chasing fewer crazy high fastballs. but this is pure speculation.

i don't know if there's a meaningful difference between aviles and y escobar. i am not impressed with any of the available FA SPs.

is this a weekly league? and with only one RP position? balfour should be picked up for his saves. and if holds and Ks count then jansen should be picked up too. i'm a little confused about your format.

YEah you pretty much said it yourself. I mean I would go for these players:

Headley: On fire, but he will slow down
Aviles: I own him and love the versatility as well
Detwiler: I really really like and think he has the most upside.

These are the 3 I like and I probably wouldn't go for a RP. If you like Risk go for Detwiler. If you like versatility go for Aviles, and if you like a hot player for now go for Headley......

Thats the way I look at it. The rest is up to you.....

Help please....

ok, you clarified the position thing. i would definitely pick up balfour for saves and jansen for Ks and holds. other FAs are waiver fodder in this format IMO. spot start them if you want. i don't think you can drop any pitchers since you are pretty thin there. i might drop espinosa who has no position to fill in your lineup. i've watch a lot of brandon belt ABs since he's on the giants. apparently he has very recently changed his approach. that's good since he has a hole in his swing (the strike zone). i don't know if he can fill that hole though. i'd consider dropping belt. also moustakas doesn't seem to be a place to play either.
