I would take the McCutchen side myself easily. But, if the team getting Butler does not think they can compete this year (slightly early for that, don't you think), I suppose it works.
I am very hesitant to veto any trade. If an owner thinks it betters their team, who are the rest of us to argue. That being said, I'd think about this one.
If you are not the final arbiter, I would let the Yahoo league office take a look at it. I would generally take McCutchen>Butler; I don't know why you'd need more.
With your league rules, it might not be so bad. If McCutchen can't be kept, then his value is only as good as his performance this year. Bedard is hit or miss...if he stays healthy, he'll most likely do well.
But if Butler is in year 1 of 3 possible keep years...and he steps it up a notch, this trade would be viewed as useful, I suppose.

Not at all. While most people would prefer McCutchen that doesn't mean it is a bad trade. I think Butler is going to increase his power numbers this year and will put him into the top 7 or so 1B. Plus many people think Bedard can still be a pretty good SP. Add in the fact that he can only keep McCutchen for this year but Butler for three more years and this is an ok deal.
I think the owner could have gotten more for McCutchen but he might have tried and this was the best offer he got back. We also don't know what his roster is setup like and where his depth is.
I hate, HATE when other league owners mess around with vetoing trades or trying to stop a trade. I have been apart of many trades where it looks like one owner got owned only to look back at the deal and realize that the other owner got owned. Stop trying to run the other owners team. Only time you should veto is if their is collusion or the integrity of the league is in question.

Cool. Don't get me wrong, I HATE vetoes and have been the victim of many attempts. I was just posting this to gauge feedback since the commish and some other folks asked me my opinion and while I think it's a questionable deal, there is province for owners to make bad deals that are not collusory.

Its probably not a smart deal for the guy giving up McC, but still a fair one. The other guy is bullish on Butler over the next three years; that's his problem.
