Inactive league member, what should I do?

Is there anyway to switch the team to another manager so someone else can play the team? Maybe somebody wants the challenge.

Well, one basic solution (and I don't know if it's been mentioned already) is to have a "draft" of his players? Choose the teams that did worst last year (I believe you said it was a keeper, I may be wrong) and do a reverse-order draft? Two rounds, and the rest go to FA.

Just my thoughts, of course.

In that case, assuming you can't have someone take over his team, I would run his team as though it were your team for the first 4 weeks, and then bench all his players. Ask the league for input to see if that's okay.

There really isn't a completely fair way to handle this. As someone else pointed out, if you bench all his players this benefits those that play his team more often than the rest of the league.

You could leave his players active until you reach a point in the schedule where everyone plays his team an equal number of times, and then bench all his players. That way, the teams that play him an "extra" time at least have to do some work.

I think what I am going to do is fill his roster for him now.

going to use yahoo ranks, so its not going to be my personal opinion.

and if after 4 weeks he still doesn't show up then I will bench his team.

This way if he comes back he will have some points and probably be happier than if I left everyone on the bench.

It could have been because of a medical reason he left work (think he was having back problems)

maybe he will feel better in 4 weeks, I would at least hope so.

I think after discusing this with the rest of the league everyone will see this is the best way to go.
