Those numbers show he's consistently very good, not dominant. Yet, he was just paid like he was a top 3 pitcher with Cy Young awards in his back pocket. I never said the Giants made a bad move, they couldn't let him walk.it's not about what he means to the Giants for me. I'm saying it's not the contract Matt Cain should have received and the asking price for quality pitching keeps getting worse every year.

Prices always go up, and it doesn't follow inflation. Look how much the Dodgers just sold for. Just wait to see how much Felix Hernandez gets in free agency, and then we can talk about how Cain is getting paid like a top 3 pitcher. That said, while it may be within the range expected for a guy like him, pitching in general is a risky investment. In fact, every time a player signs a big FA contract everybody says it's too much money. We're always comparing it to the precedent that was set 2/3/4 years ago. It's not like everybody just signed a contract at the same time, and Cain is making more than Halladay.

Shea hears that the sixth year option will not vest if Cain finishes the fifth year of the contract on the disabled list with an elbow or shoulder injury

That is good news, at least some protection built into it.
