Giants extend MATT CAIN

It's a big one but I'm happy. With the way the Giants have spent their money, I wouldn't have trusted them to spend it better elsewhere. He'll be 33 when the contract ends which doesn't seem too bad.

Can't be mad at this. Guy's been excellent for some time now. I also heard earlier today that Joey Votto was close to signing an extension with Cinci. Could be an interesting day.

Hellllllll yaaaa!
Im seriously overjoyed right now. Was really beginning to think this was Cain's farewell season as a Giant.
Agree 100% with Giantsfan in that i'd take this over any of the other of the myriad ways the Giants front office could have blown 140 mil.

Next step: Lock up Bumgarners Arbitration years + a year or 2 of FA.

Well, I guess now we have an idea of what the Phillies will have to offer Hamels

Christ, Barry Zito is still signed at max money for another 2 seasons, 3 if he stays healthy in 2013. :-*

This was a good move though, won't get much better than Cain on the open market.

There is exactly a 0% chance that the Giants allow Zito's option for 2014 to vest.

This is fantastic news. Finally a decent decision out of the Giants office.

It's been a disappointing day for me. With this news for Cain and the news that Votto and the Reds are closing in on an extension it leaves two less players for Magic to Co. to target this winter (or at the deadline) if/when payroll expands. It was a good move for the Midgets.

well, I think this makes it harder for the Philles to retain Hamels and gives a better chance to LA to throw money at him.
