Hey guys...wanted to thank you all for your help so far. The stats (and there are so many versions) are easy to find...but the nuance is not so easy to pick up.
So I need one last bit of advice...as my title states, I need to decide whether I use my open roster spot to fill in my bench of rotation. Not worth trying for a closer as no one of any value is available.
My league details.... 12 team Yahoo H2H league with a few stat geek categories replacing the standard. If we split the 10 categories 5/5 it is a tie for the week.
Hitting: R, TB, RBI, OBP, NSB (Net Stolen Bases) (TB, OBP and NSB replace AVG, HR and SB)
Pitching: IP, SV, Ks, ERA, WHIP (IP replaces W)
My Roster C- Mike Napoli 1B - Prince Fielder 2B - Rickie Weeks SS - Derek Jeter 3B - Arod OF - Brett Gardner OF - Melky Cabrera OF - Peter Bourjols UT - Yoenis Cespedes BN - Carl Crawford, Alfonso Soriano, Kelly Johnson, Mat Gamel
SP - Clayton Kershaw, Cole Hamels, James Shields, Gavin Floyd, Phil Hughes
RP - John Axford, Brandon League, Brett Myers
DL - Chris Carpenter
Best Available Hitters Bryan LaHair Marco Scutaro (I think he could have a surprising year in Coors as the starting SS) Angel Pagan JD Martinez Scott Rolen Russel MArtin Mike Aviles Chase Headley Zack Cozart Ryan Raburn
Best Available Pitchers Jon Niese Edinson Volquez Jon Sanchez Chris Capuano Ivan Nova Brian Matusz Jeff Niemann Mark Buehrle Randy Wolf Josh Tomlin
Thanks!

I'd also drop Soriano and his sub .300 OBP and pick up another starting pitcher. With IP as a category, you would be best getting more than 5 starting pitchers.
Volquez and Capuano are intriguing in their home parks. Niese for sure.
Just an idea but I have Aviles because of his versatility and he should be gaining SS eligibility soon (depending on league settings)
Streamers Yesterday > NONE (used all of weeks moves shuffling batting) Today > NONE Tomorrow > Duane Below Vs KC *Worley (> My guy ) (* Wanted but taken)

Completely agree. I would grab Volquez for sure. He has potential still and is pitching in Petco now. So that should help his numbers out.

Problem is I doubt Aviles will start more than half of the games Boston plays this year.

OK...BUT...would that not also potentially compromise ERA and WHIP for IP and K? And is that a sound strategy?

I dont think Volquez will have too much trouble with ERA, but I can see his WHIP being higher then some would like. He is notoriously wild. But if he can return to his form from 2-3 years ago, he will be a great pick up. You are just taking a chance. I personally think the risk is worth it though.

I named two of the safer bets of all the pitchers you named that are still available. Volquez and Capuano are just as risky as Gavin Floyd but they pitch in much better parks. Look at Volquez's great year with Cincy a few years back and Capuano's last healthy season in Milwaukee, there is some serious upside there.
With only 5 pitchers, you better have 5 aces because most of the time you will be facing teams with 7-9 pitchers per week, you'll be sacrificing IP and K's every week, and what if Hughes has one of his patented Yankee Stadium blowups? And Floyd is prone to very bad outings as well. You'll not only lose IP and K's, but you'll be at a risk to lose ERA and WHIP as well.
