Trade Advice: Roy Halladay for Justin Upton

Postby froggyvk » Tue Mar 27, 2012 2:43 pm

This trade was offered to me and I'd like to get some advice. It's a 14 team league, I have four solid OFs holding down my 3 OF and UTIL spots, and a few other options on my bench.

C: --empty-- (I'll pick someone up when Tim Hudson goes on the DL)
1B: Billy Butler
2B: Neil Walker
3B: Aramis Ramirez
SS: Alexei Ramirez
OF: Jacoby Ellsbury
OF: Justin Upton
OF: Matt Holliday
UTL: Michael Bourn
Bench: Justin Smoak, Lorenzo Cain, Yadier Alonso, Bryce Harper

SP: Jered Weaver
SP: Jon Lester
SP: Ricky Romero
RP: Cory Luebke
RP: Sean Marshall (I'm looking to trade him because he's my only closer and I'll punt that category -- 5x5 H2H)
RP: Daniel Bard
P: Matt Garza
P: Doug Fister
P: Scott Baker
Bench: Henderson Alvarez, Tim Hudson

Just to be clear, I'd be receiving Halladay and trading Upton, so I'd be replacing Upton with Cain in my starting lineup.

Nope. Pass. You pitching is good enough. No need to give up Upton for Halladay.

Help on mine

You should be able to command Halladay plus another piece for Upton. I wouldn't trade him personally.

I also don't agree with you putting saves. I would personally drop Alvarez & even Baker for some setup guys on teams where the closer isn't reliable. It's one thing if you punt a category mid season. Don't give up on it right from the beginning.

I wouldn't do that in Roto leagues, but in H2H having all starters and no max innings limit I expect to win every week in wins and strikeouts, and I think my starters are good enough to take down ERA and WHIP most weeks. It wasn't my mindset going into the draft but closers were being ridiculously over-valued -- I took Marshall in Round 17 and he was the last closer available, and I figured he'll build up some value and can eventually be dealt for a good return. David Hernandez is available and Putz is an injury risk, but most of the other top tier setup guys were drafted.
