[Updated]Gamble on Carpenter burned me...now what? [AWHIR]

Postby TruYankeeFan » Fri Mar 23, 2012 10:21 pm

So trying to figure out who to grab once I stash Carpenter on the DL on opening day.

So here is what you need to know about my league and team....

12 team Yahoo H2H league with a few stat geek categories replacing the standard. If we split the 10 categories 5/5 it is a tie for the week.

Hitting: R, TB, RBI, OBP, NSB (Net Stolen Bases)

Pitching: IP, SV, Ks, ERA, WHIP

As you can see...pitching is not too different...and I never would have drafted by wins anyway...to subjective...so I did ok with pitching...offense I am not so sure.

Roster:
C- Mike Napoli
1B - Prince Fielder
2B - Rickie Weeks
SS - Derek Jeter
3B - Arod
OF - Brett Gardner
OF - Melky Cabrera
OF - Peter Bourjols
UT - Yoenis Cespedes
BN - Carl Crawford
BN - Alfonso Soriano
BN - Kelly Johnson
BN - JD Martinez (he looks to be a HUGE sleeper in this scoring system)

SP - Clayton Kershaw
SP - Cole Hamels
RP - Brandon League
RP - John Axford
P - James Shields
P - Chris Carpenter
P - Ivan Nova
P - Phil Hughes
BN - Brett Myers

Available FA pitchers:

Mark Buerle
Ryan Dempster
Randy Wolf
Carl Pavano
Jeremy Guthrie
Josh Tomlin
Gavin Floyd
Ricky Nolasco
Jonathan Sanchez
Jonathan Neise

Available FA Hitters:

Marco Scutaro
Scott Rolen
Mike Carp
Micheal Brantley
Todd Helton
Jed Lowrie
Jordan Schafer
Ben Revere
Will Venable

Do I need hitting or pitching and anyone here jump out at you? I am kinda thinking of gambling on either Niese or Schafer. I think Niese is set for a big year and Schafer is predicted to be a top 5 NSB guy and is still a FA.

What do you guys think?

Thanks

leave a link...will help in return!

Edit: 3.25.12.- Morneau just hit waivers and will be available on the 27th

I'd say Nielsen or Dempster. Norse might be a fun gamble here.

I'd probably go with Dempster, though Carp is intriguing as well.

OK...a question...and few more that I missed before...including a couple high talent guys that may be sent to AAA...but curious of they are worth stashing.

How valuable is it to have a solid Utility guy on your bench (I mean real utility ie plays 3+ positions and hits well) such as Mike Avilies or Daniel Murphy? I dropped Murphy for Soriano...but sorta think it was a mistake with my glut of OF...what do you think? Should I pick up Aviles (someone else already grabbed Murphy)?

More FAs to consider...
Josh Collmenter
Jonathan Broxton
Sean Marshall
Cain Lorenzo
Greg Holland
Kyle Lohse
Mike Aviles (is there more value to a guy like this who can fill in ?)
Matt Harrison
Ian Desmond (just cleared waivers)
Matt Gamel
Ryan Raburn
Pedro Alvarez
Jason Bourgois

Anthony Rizzo is available too...but with him starting the year at AAA is he worth stashing?

Keep Soroino, he's good for 25 hrs, and you need the power.
I would get Holland or Broxton for Nova.

Ok...please forgive me, I need to understand...if we do not score at all for HRs or slugging in any way...do I really need the power? Would I not be better with someone with more TB and higher OBP or R or NSB or RBI?

Since each HR gives you 4 TB, 1 R, and at least 1 RBI....HR's are definitely still counted in your league. Just have to look a little harder to see it.

Soriano should be around 225 TB, not great, but not bad. He should provide decent R/RBI too.
He will hurt in OBA though.
Who do you like?
Carp is the only other guy i see?

Well...I am not drooling over anyone in particular. Just having trouble fighting my gut to get a guy who can reasonably fill in at multiple positions...especially with such injury risks at 2B, SS and 3B (although I hope his new fitness regimen from Dr Clark takes Arod off this list).

I know there is value at having the best available talent on the bench regardless of position and open starting spots...but at what point is having a more than capable backup for your front-line risks supersede that.

On a side note (maybe worth its own thread?)...I am hearing more and more that Cespedes is likely starting off at AAA...so starting to wonder when I bail on him for one of these guys?

Right now my gut is telling me to....

- Drop Nova for Dempster or Holland
- Drop Cespedes for Mike Aviles (not sure Cespedes could out perform Soriano especially since he will likely be at AAA in the next couple days...even if not is gambling on him better than having a safety for my injury risks?)
- Place Carpenter on DL on 28th and grab Niese...praying he is still there(worried one of my leaguemate's will wake up and snag him, as his peripherals were really good last year and with his nasal surgery...he supposedly has much more strength and endurance now that he can breath)
