This is a h2h points auction league. We start with $260.
I need to choose 1 more keeper, and 2 protected free agents (which means I won't bid on them, but I can choose to match the winning bid, and would get them at that price).
Scoring 1pt = singles, run, walk, rbi 2pts = doubles, stolen bases, 3pts = triple, 4pts = home run
My first 2 keepers are A Gonzalez ($29) and Strasberg ($9).
I need to choose 1 of: E Hosmer ($8) or D Jennings ($9).
Based on the projections from "Spreadsheet" available on these forums, below are the projected stats:
Hosmer- 173 total hits, 39 doubles, 3 triples, 25 homers, 100rbi, 86 runs, 11 sb's, 65 walks = projected CBS points- 566 (would have ranked as 7th 1st basemen last year, right behind Tex)
D Jennings- 164 total hits, 33 doubles, 8 triples, 13 homers, 62 rbis, 110 runs, 46 sb's, 69 walks = projected CBS points- 585 (would have ranked as 8th OF last year)
PS. I don't have a corner infield slot, but if Hosmer is the play he could be my one utility player.
Also, which 2 should I use as a protected free agent? Hosmer/D Jennings (whichever I don't use as a keeper) Beachey T Hanson D Wright
Hosmer easily. He is better than Jennings and cheaper. I don't see Jennings getting that many SB's.
I would protect Beachey and Wright. I am worried about Wright but so might everyone else and you could get him cheap. I could see doing Jennings instead if you have more faith in him than I do.

In terms of protection, I'm definitely protecting Beachy. And I can see the reasoning for protecting Wright as well, since people might be a bit hesitant with the money they throw out for him. People are more likely to overpay for young "promising" hitters, so Jennings will go higher than you'd probably like, so it may not be prudent to protect him.
Hanson could be good to protect for the same reasons as Wright--injury problems might drive the price down, and make him more keepable.

Jennings seems to be getting a lot of love in another thread regarding points league keepers.
I wouldn't buy into it. I think Hosmer is worth it more to keep, and as you aren't keeping Jennings, there's no point in protecting him, because as you said, there's a lot of hype surrounding him. He's going to go unreasonably high, and it would be silly to match whatever offer was made (thus, it is pointless to protect him in the first place).
The people you want to protect are the ones who you think may slip under the radar for certain reasons. The two names that jump out are Hanson and Wright. They are both injured with question marks. Protect one or both of them, and I think you can get them for better value than Jennings.
