Is Adam Jones a keeper?

Postby Knights » Wed Mar 14, 2012 7:10 am

16-team 6x6 keeper - extra categories are OPS and L. We keep 6 players, and the OF roster spots are specified as LF/CF/RF.

I have until the weekend to submit my keepers. So far the sure things are Pedroia, Hanley, Lawrie and Garza. The group of options for my final 2 keepers includes the likes of Beltran, Ethier, Swisher, Ike Davis, Heath Bell...

But I want to make another move to try to improve before the draft, and I've decided to target a CF... which has brough me to Adam Jones.

Could I consider Adam Jones one of my final 2 keepers if I were able to acquire him? I would think he would be, but I want to make sure I'm not overrating him. Compared to my other options - Beltran/Ethier/Swisher are all RF eligible, so I probably wouldn't want to keep more than one out of that group; Ike Davis' Valley Fever leaves some concerns and he's hardly a sure bet for this season regardless; and with Heath Bell the only way I could see keeping a closer is if my other options were as bad as they may currently look to round out my 6 keepers.

Adam Jones seems poised to breakout sooner than later. He's completed some consecutive consistent seasons and is only getting ready to enter his prime age. And even though his SB aren't as high as some other CFs out there, when looking at the breakdown of LF, CF and RF-eligible players, CF is clearly the most shallow. Hence why I'm thinking of trying to acquire a higher-end CF before the draft.

My roster from the end of last season is below. Please take a look and see if you can confirm my thoughts that Adam Jones would be a good keeper for me if I can get him.

John Jaso C
Nick Swisher 1B/RF
James Loney 1B
Ike Davis 1B
Dustin Pedroia 2B
Neil Walker 2B
Hanley Ramírez SS
Delmon Young LF
Johnny Damon LF
Grady Sizemore CF
Dexter Fowler CF
Carlos Beltrán RF
Andre Ethier RF

Matt Garza SP
Jake Peavy SP
Freddy García SP
J.A. Happ SP
Jason Vargas SP
Daisuke Matsuzaka SP
Andrew Bailey RP
Heath Bell RP
Jason Motte RP
Tyler Clippard RP
Frank Francisco RP

1b Davis or Swishersweetz (I think he'll be ok for the season)
2b Pedroia
SS Hanley
3b Lawrie
RF Ethier
SP Garza
If you can't trade.

I'd look to package Swisher + Bell for Adam Jones that might work.

I wouldn't count on Jones to break out. He's been consistently above average over the past 4 years. With that said he does get a nice value boost with LF/CF/RF spots and OPS. He would fit very nicely on your team as a keeper.

I would go after Jones and then make Davis my 6th keeper.
