My league decided to try a wacky rule change and now all the pitching slots are open to any pitcher. Obviously, this raises the possibility of punting either starting pitchers (and going after SV, ERA and WHIP) or relievers (and increasing your chances of getting W and K).

So, I'm wondering if anyone else has ever played in a league like this and, if so...
1) what strategies did people use?
2) which strategies actually worked best?

If its a roto league just draft as you always would, if its a h2h league just draft as you always would, if you normally like to punt a category - punt it, if you normally don't - don't. ;-D

Are there IP limits if it's roto? Is there a bench?

You can do either of the strategies that you talked about but you put yourself at a disadvantage (in roto especially) if you punt categories. I would probably draft as many starters (and 2-3 closers) as I liked. And then at the end of the draft or during the season replace ineffective starters with the elite setup men since they help your ratios and could become closers. At a certain point it makes less sense to add a Buehrle type and more sense to add a Sean Marshall type.

Right, I didn't specify - it's a head-to-head league.

The suggestion to stock up on elite set-up guys as the season goes on sounds like a good one. I suppose I'll also have to wait for the draft and play it by ear - some guys have hinted at building pitching staffs around closers, so they might simply become prohibitively expensive.

Get 2 solid closers and then target good set up men that have shaky closers.

I played in a league with this format for a few years. I found that I ended up carrying more relievers (closers and set up) than starters. I didn't punt wins by any means (did a lot of streaming), but this format definitely favors the use of relievers.
