12-team, 5x5 $260 budget auction league. we keep only 3.
I'm keeping Verlander $23 and Jennings $5.
Choices:
Pedroia $33 Wainwright $5 Kimbrel $6
Pedroia is good value at $33. Last year in our initial draft, 22 guys went for $40+. Pedroia as an elite, borderline first round 2B -- I expect him to go for at least $43. He's the safest choice, but I'm tempted to save money at 2b and go after a cheaper alternative in the auction and spend that extra cash saved on 1B, 3B, and/or OF. I like Kimbrel, especially with his Ks, but I will no doubt be able to find 2-3 closers for the same price range (albeit they're not Kimbrel) --highest priced closer last year was $15. Waino has the highest upside for the price, but he also has the biggest flame-out potential...and I'd be keeping 2 SP out of 3 keepers. Thoughts?

I think I would keep Ped's over Wainwright and not even think about Kimbrel. Your getting a pretty nice price on arguably one of the top 2 2nd basemen in the game and he's somebody that would be in your lineup everyday. If you don't keep him and decide to go with Wainwright then you better make sure you can use that money saved and get a TOP 3 overall player at either 1st or 3rd and maybe try to win someone like B.Phillips for less money.

That's kind of how I'm thinking. Use the money saved to invest in a higher priced 1B or 3B -- since I'm more comfortable with lower cost 2b options than I am cheaper 1b or 3b options. Though it would/does suck to lose a bargain in Pedroia. torn.

Save the money. Maybe Pedroia goes for $43 but I think there is a pretty good chance he doesn't. If he does, then spend the money somewhere else. Kimbrel will no doubt go for way more than $6 at auction.
