Value of SBs in H2H leagues

Postby SAKIC_19 » Sun Mar 04, 2012 8:49 pm

Thoughts on the value of SBs for a 12 team, H2H redraft league.

I have choice of where to pick in the first round. Leaning toward top 3. Wondering if it makes sense to take Cabby #1 or are the SB upside of Kemp or Braun make you lean towards them?

Assuming I could get Kinsler, pedoria, mccut, or wright in the 2/3 rounds I could potentially get 3 guys that have floors of 20/20.

Am I overthinking this as I love McCab and the consistency he brings.

Thanks in advance.

I think you could make an argument for all three of those guys being 1. I think you are overthinking the SB's a little bit though. To me SB's are perhaps the easiest category to address later in the draft or on the waiver wire. If you think M-Cab is the best out of the three, take him, I wouldn't be worried about not getting SB's with the first pick of the draft.

Pretty much this. I avoid H2H formats whenever possible, but when I did play in them I would stock pile HR/RBI guys. I would draft 1-2 SB guys toward the end and play them once I had a nice lead in the other cats.

In a Roto league, I would love to have a 5 category contributor like Kemp. By the end of the year you can bank on X amount of steals. And by having guys like Kemp, you don't need to draft players who will only contribute in 2-3 categories (the SB guys you can draft later on).

In a H2H league, SB varies wildly from week to week. You can lose SB while having a roster that should win the category due to a small 7 day sample. This is where I like the 2-3 category contributors. You can plug them into your roster for 2-3 days, get a couple of SB, bench them and come out with a win. And guys who specialize in SB (like Bourn) should contribute SB more evenly week to week vs. a guy like Kemp. But drafting guys like Bourn carry more risk. A roster whose only source of steals is 1-2 players can get hit hard by the injury bug.

At the end of the day, I'd take the player you like best. Put less emphasis on steals and make sure to have a speedster on your bench for match-ups that dictate the need for extra speed.

Speed specialists can be had later, I generally go with the 'big boppers' in the first/2nd round of H2H drafts. However, a 40-40 guy, to me, is more valuable than Miggy or Albert in ANY FORMAT. Never pass on a 5 tool player.

Kemp is my #1 pick in any format.

I'm drafting #1 overall in my 14 team h2h keeper and am taking Braun. My argument for him over Kemp is simple... consistency, if Kemp can do it again this season then he moves into the top 3 convo, but util then Braun > Kemp. As far as the argument over Miggy, the SB's really are the deciding factor, as I believe the 2 will be very close in every other counting stat. But I'm a huge Brauns fan, and can absolutely understand you taking Cabrera if you like him more... can't go wrong w/either. And to go along w/popular opinion, SB's can be easily made up later in the draft. Take a look at mine please?
