How is such a safe and reliable starting pitcher overlooked by almost every fantasy owner? He has been rock solid over the last 5 seasons. He even pitched well last year posting a 3.97 ERA, 1.16 WHIP, and a 7.38 K/9 over 192 and 2/3 innings.
Since 2007:
Lilly has averaged 195 IP
Lilly has posted a 7.69 K/9
Lilly has a 3.74 ERA
Lilly has posted a 1.13 WHIP
Whats not to love about Lilly? I took him with pick 200 in a snake draft today. I also got him for 2 dollars in an auction draft last night.
Why does everyone overlook the consistency of Ted Lilly?
Because he puts up very consistent numbers, but nothing that has ever warranted a Top 15 type expectation from him. He is almost always a great bargain for me.
His FIP has been over 4.20 the last two seasons. He's never been a power pitcher, but his Swinging Strike % has declined 3 straight years. He just doesn't present that top 15 upside as previously mentioned. He can be a solid back end guy filling out a teams rotation, but at age 36 that's it. The wheels could start to fall off the track. I'd rather take McCarty as a WHIP guy, or draft Johan hoping he's the comeback player of the year.
Becouse there are many excitting young pitchers that are coming up through the syston that are younger and alot better. He become a .500 pitcher. He just got to that point where they become an after thought.
Anyway it's not about the respect for it's still there. It's just he has reach the point where he is more valueable to his team to wining baseball games then he is to you helping you to win your fantasy game.
