Yahoo 12 team points league, keeper and 1st round advice.

Postby smockstack » Wed Feb 29, 2012 1:07 pm

I'm very new to this game and joined a Yahoo league last year as an expansion team in a keeper league where the majority of the stars were already spoken for. I need to determine my 5 bats and 5 arms keepers as well as my first round draft pick for this season.

12 teams, each team keeps 5 bats and 5 arms, head to head points system;
Batters Stats: At Bats (AB) .25, Runs (R) 1, Singles (1B) 1, Doubles (2B) 2, Triples (3B) 6, Home Runs (HR) 4, Runs Batted In (RBI) 3, Sacrifice Flys (SF) 1, Stolen Bases (SB) 4
Caught Stealing (CS) -2, Walks (BB) 2, Strikeouts (K) -2, Ground Into Double Play (GIDP) -5, Assists (A) .25, Errors (E) -3

Pitchers Stats: Pitching Appearances (APP) 1, Innings Pitched (IP) 1, Wins (W) 10, Losses (L) -10, Complete Games (CG) 10, Shutouts (SHO) 5, Saves (SV) 10, Hits (H) -1, Total Batters Faced (TBF) .25, Earned Runs (ER) -1, Home Runs (HR) -4, Walks (BB) -2, Strikeouts (K) 3, Batters Grounded Into Double Plays (GIDP) 4,Quality Starts (QS) 5.

Pitchers are generally worth more than bats, middle relievers have no real value and Ks are the driving force behind high scoring pitchers. I have no inkling that I have any shot of a championship for a few years so I'm on a three year plan of getting some really good, young talent. I'd love some advice for my keepers (5 bats, 5 arms) from this list.

My current roster;
Brian McCann (Atl - C)
Billy Butler (KC - 1B)
Danny Espinosa (Was - 2B)
Martín Prado (Atl - 3B,LF)
Emilio Bonifacio (Mia - 3B,SS,LF,CF,RF)
Dustin Ackley (Sea - 2B)
Mike Trout (LAA - LF,CF,RF)
Justin Upton (Ari - RF)
Michael Bourn (Atl - CF)
Jesus Montero (Sea - Util)
Mike Leake (Cin - SP)
Homer Bailey (Cin - SP)
Cory Luebke (SD - SP,RP)
Julio Teherán (Atl - SP)
Jair Jurrjens (Atl - SP)
Ryan Madson (Cin - RP)
Jordan Walden (LAA - RP)
Mike Minor (Atl - SP)
Matt Moore (TB - RP)
Jacob Turner (Det - SP)
Randall Delgado (Atl - SP)
Shelby Miller (StL - RP)NA
Shin-Soo Choo (Cle - RF)
Jonathan Sánchez (KC - SP)
Josh Johnson (Mia - SP)
Johan Santana (NYM - SP)

Also, I have the first round draft pick, I'm leaning towards Yu Darvish and I was curious as to some thoughts on this.

Thanks so much! I'm loving reading the forums so far.

The best advice I've received so far;

if you need high end talent take upside.
Upton
McCann
Ackley
Trout
Montero

Johnson
Moore
Miller
then any two out of Jurrjens, Turner, Leake, Teheran and Minor

I'd take Darvish and try and trade something like Darvish and Moore for a legit ace

In fact I might do the same thing with Johnson, and try and trade something like Johnson and Miller for an ace without injury concerns.

Brian McCann (Atl - C) ;-D
Billy Butler (KC - 1B)
Danny Espinosa (Was - 2B)
Martín Prado (Atl - 3B,LF)
Emilio Bonifacio (Mia - 3B,SS,LF,CF,RF)
Dustin Ackley (Sea - 2B)
Mike Trout (LAA - LF,CF,RF) ;-D
Shin-Soo Choo (Cle - RF) ;-D
Justin Upton (Ari - RF) ;-D
Michael Bourn (Atl - CF) ;-D
Jesus Montero (Sea - Util)

Homer Bailey (Cin - SP)
Cory Luebke (SD - SP,RP) ;-D
Julio Teherán (Atl - SP) ;-D
Jair Jurrjens (Atl - SP)
Ryan Madson (Cin - RP) ;-D
Jordan Walden (LAA - RP) ;-D
Mike Minor (Atl - SP)
Matt Moore (TB - RP) ;-D
Jacob Turner (Det - SP)
Randall Delgado (Atl - SP)
Shelby Miller (StL - RP)NA

Jonathan Sánchez (KC - SP)
Josh Johnson (Mia - SP) ;-D
Johan Santana (NYM - SP)

Your SP you are throwing back here are a dime a dozen. Teheran has too much to toss back. I'd take a chance and keep him. Sure Minor has a shot in the rotation but htere are two spots to fill with Huddy and Hanson not being avialable to start the year. Luebke is a nice upside SP to keep. God this is a Braves fan's dream. I hate throwing back Montero but with McCann you have the best catcher in the game. Though if Montero had C eligiblity I could see an argument easily over McCann due to years in his prime you'd have Montero. Johnson is a risk/reward ace you HAVE to keep. Moore you have to keep. I also hate keeping closers but you have two solid ones and I would keep them both in this situation and not worry about saves at all. I am thinking of the future as well as this year. If you don't think Trout will win a job out of ST I would ship him for Bonafacio so you''ll have SS covered, but I can't fathom letting a top talent like Trout out of your clutches. YOu lack a lot of elite talent so I figure go young, young man...If Trout makes the team your OF/UTL are covered and you only have to worry about your INF and SP in the draft (best available with each pick).

I appreciate this well thought out response, thank you!

My thoughts were using this season as another building year towards taking a shot next year.

I was inclined to keep Montero over McCann thinking he'll get C eligibility by mid May. Catchers are pretty undervalued in this league, so a high production catcher is quite worthwhile. Choo I'm torn on, only because his production last year was crap and he's coming off injury and he's 30. I was more inclined to keep Ackley.

As for the pitchers, Johnson, Moore, and Luebke I'm pretty dead set on keeping. RPs can we worth ALOT on this league if they get a ton of saves and Ks. (Example Kimbrel was in the top ten highest scoring pitchers along with Axford.) I'm inclined to keep one or the other and I'm probably leaning towards Walden because of his age. This leaves me with the high upside prospects; Teheran or Miller. To me Teheran is closer to getting a full time starting position than Miller is, but I'm hoping two weeks of spring training will give me a better inkling prior to the draft.

I'll consider your advice as I move forward.

Thanks again!
