Postby TheRock » Sun Feb 12, 2012 11:07 pm

Well oscar brought it up O:-)

How does everyone feel about making this thing an auction? If you've not done one I think you'd like it.

How would this work? I've done one slow auction before, and it was a nightmare. Took forever, and everyone waited right until the deadline before posting final bids, which meant I was disadvantaged being in the UK, with a deadline of 1am UK time!!

Happy to consider it in principle, although I do like the snake / couch managers draft set up.

I know couchmanagers has an auction option but I've never used it so I don't really know how it works. I'm in the midst of one now that we're doing via message board. Basically everyone nominates a player then people bid on him. As soon as there has been 24 hours with no new bids he is considered sold and another player is nominated. Does take a little longer, we've been going 3 weeks today and we're about halfway through.

Found this post on Couchmanagers.
Here is a basic run-down of the auction draft features:

*Public/Private
*League size (up to 30 teams)
*Custom roster line-up (up to 40 roster spots)
*Mixed, AL only or NL only
*Set the budget
*Original time limit (amount of time a player is up for auction)
*Extension time limit (after there is a new bidder, what do you want the clock to be set back to)
*Set maximum number of auctions that can be going on at one time (fast drafts usually want one or two, maybe three but slow auctions usually have 20 or more; max is 75)

For FAST auctions:
*Teams nominate in order (the order is which slot the owners grabbed. So first team listed in the auction page is first to nominate, and so on.)

For SLOW auctions:
*Nominations go to either the winner of the auction that just ended, or the original team that nominated that player. You set that rule when you create the auction.

********* Most options can be adjusted during the auction. Fast auctions usually start off with maximum 1 nomination at a time, and when people have the hang of it, it gets bumped up to 2 or 3 so the draft moves along faster. Draft manager can also hand out nominations, pause the auction, edit original time limit and extension time.

Draft manager can delete a player that has been auctioned off to add them back to the auction pool and the owner is refunded.

Still in two minds, but willing to give it a go, perhaps.

Maybe we should do two leagues, one in each style! :-D

I'm a little nervous about the logistics of the whole thing. I would like to move my money league to an auction but I have never attempted one online.

Rock - What about a Mock Auction to see how it works? I have one more credit to use on CM...would be happy to use it for a Mock Auction.

I don't know how to vote here. I love how our football draft moved from a snake to an auction but the auction is in person so I'm a little skeptical to see how this would work online. I'm gonna vote auction but don't really care how we do it.

Make it happen! Set us up a simple league with no bench, 10 teams for now. We'll try it for a bit to see what we think.

I can set it up after work today.

Since our objective is to test drive the system and not draft a winning team, how about:

10 Teams

Roster
3 1B
3 3B

Budget of $100

That should create a good balance of supply and demand for some interesting bidding.

Will that work?

Do we want to knock this out over a weekend?

Suggested "Time on Clock" for each player?

Rock, you have proven to be a wise commissioner over the years (except the time you fell out of a truck that was not moving !+) ) I defer to you on the structure of the Mock Auction.

I'm excited, I have wanted to try this out for a couple of years now.

Yeah, that's a great idea oscar. Just a small roster like that so we could knock it out in a short time to see how things work. I'm just not sure there are 30 third basemen in baseball B-) But whatever, we're not creating actual teams just test-driving the mechanism.

When can everyone be available to try this out? You should only need to check in on couchmanagers a time or two a day to place bids.

Done
Location: couchmangers.com
Name: Leftovers Mock Auction
Bidding starting time: 8 hours
Bidding reset time: 8 hours
Password: leftover

Settings can be adjusted on the run

I started the auction with 1 nomination per team then increased it to a maximum of 20 players up for auction at any given time . I'm not sure if I have it set correctly but adjusting it looks like it will not be a problem.

I have the auction set to start manually so we can post the starting time here.

The sooner the better.
