I would like your opinion on my picks so far. This is a beginning 12-team keeper league (7x7). I had the 2nd pick overall. Off to a good start or in trouble?
R1P2--Joey Votto (Cabrera went first) R2P23--Felix Hernandez R3P26--Andrew McCutchen R4P47--Madison Bumgarner (Trout, Strasburg, and Harper have already been picked, so I was afraid to let him fall further. Love this guy) R5P50--Josh Hamilton (Passed over Pence, Morse, Greinke, Jennings, Haren, Price)
Be brutally honest with me, so I can work out any kinks going forward.
First 3 picks look solid too me. I think Votto is a pretty high, I think I would've went Kemp or Braun, much safer picks. Not sure what pitchers were available ahead of Bumgarner at that round, seems a little high. After drafting The King, I would've liked to see you draft something in the infield first. I bet you could've landed him in the 5th round (Bumgarner). Either way, nice start.
The other pitchers that were available were very good: Hamels, Haren, Greinke, Price, Gallardo, Lester, Cain. However, I love Bumgarner and K/BB is a stat in our league and he has lots of control. This was more of a gut pick than anything. People are choosing young players left and right, so he was not going to be around. Case in point, Matt Moore was the next pitcher off the board.
I guess I'm most interested in what people think of Hamilton as the 50th pick.
I think Votto was a little high but it wasn't that bad. I like your first 3 picks but your next 2 picks seem iffy. I would've taken a lot of the players you listed next to Hamilton over Bumgarner, but I wouldn't say it was a horrible pick. Same with Hamilton, he seems a little too risky for me because he's always getting hurt, but he has potential to put up monster numbers.
Pick Player Position 2 Joey Votto 1B 23 Felix Hernandez SP 26 Andrew McCutchen OF 47 Madison Bumgarner SP 50 Josh Hamilton OF 71 Dan Uggla 2B 74 Michael Young 1B, 2B, 3B 95 Mat Latos SP 98 Michael Cuddyer 1B, OF
This is a weird draft. We have a couple of managers that are clearly building for the future, rather than trying to win this year. The reason I took Bumgarner and to an extent Latos is due to the fact that I knew they wouldn't last to my next pick and I am really high on them, especially Bumgarner. Just a preference of mine. My draft philosophy the last few rounds has been to maximize value rather than filling out positions. Players are falling a bit later than they normally would if a normal draft because of the prospects being drafted early. I still need to fill SS and MI, along with 3 OF, and C. I don't know how this will work out, but I feel pretty good about this team, while at the same time knowing there are some risky players here. But its fantasy baseball, no big deal.
Really depends on your rules for keepers. Do you forfeit that Round pick next year?
You are gambling a bit much. Votto is a stretch, Baumgarner is a major stretch (over Hamels/Grienke?), as evidenced by getting Latos 4 rounds later - I like Baum too, but are they really that far apart in value? Hamilton is also a bit risky but depends who else was there.
