It's very unlikely Brothers sees any save chances this season. I can't see him getting the job over Belisle. Belisle has simply been the better of the two. Brothers also has his numbers artificially better by facing so many lefties, which will be vice versa if he was asked to close games. The Ks are nice, sure, but he walks 4.5 batters per 9 and allows way too many baserunners. Betancourt also extended his contract for next season (and an option for 2014), so chances aren't that great that he'll be traded anyway.

K/9 will never be an issue with the guy, but WHIP surely will be. He was at 1.30 over a larger major league sample size last year (40.2 innings), with an even better K rate. Even if we give him a rookie pass and assume April and his especially horrendous May 2012 are a "sophomore slump," June is the career outlier. (His July WHIP is 3.00, albeit over the admittedly miniscule sample size of three innings.) I'm not expecting a WHIP lower than 1.25 over the course of a season, and I consider that his ceiling as long as he's in Colorado.

Of course, if the K/9 is elite, the ERA is reasonable and he's piling up saves, no one will much care.

His H/9 does seem a bit inflated this year, but the BB/9 numbers are right in line with what he did in the minors (and as a rookie), as is the K rate.

Gregerson/Thayer in SD and Wilton Lopez in Houston (just got off the DL). I also think that if the Mets don't make a move at the deadline for some relief help that Parnell will emerge as the guy. But it seems likely that the Mets trade for someone.

You don't see Francisco getting the job back once he comes off the DL?

According to the coaches Francisco is slated to get his job back but he is so inconsistent that it wouldn't surprise me at all to see him lose the job or get injured again. If this does happen I think the scenario will be the Mets trading for a Betancourt/Street/Broxton/Myers type, but we shall see. Parnell is considered the COTF so they may give him a shot.

Parnell was the COTF last year too. But they went to an underwhelming Isringhausen instead, after trading K-Rod.

Sorry of someone already asked and I missed - but will there be a new 2nd half thread?

Having watched Belisle pitch in recent years, I believe the Rockies are lucky to be getting this kind of production from him. Belisle is not a closer and removing him from a current position of success would be unfortunate. I think Brothers is the best arm in that pen and if he doesn't close right away he is still the COTF for that team, which makes him the better investment.

Parnell for awhile longer:

Frank Francisco has been shut down due to a recurrence of a left oblique injury.
Francisco was getting close to a rehab assignment this week, but Mets manager Terry Collins said "he just didn't feel right." Bobby Parnell will continue to close during his absence and is probably the superior option at this point, anyway.

Typically it is locked and a new thread is created and stickied. I imagine we'll get one soon enough.
