He has been a starter and a middle reliever. But, perhaps Brad Lincoln's long-term future with the Pirates could be as a closer.
Manager Clint Hurdle floated the idea Tuesday of having Lincoln pitch toward the back of the bullpen, one day after the right-hander was stellar in a spot start.
"He gives us great depth across the board," Hurdle said. "He's a guy that can pitch in your rotation. He can pitch long.
"I really believe with the fastball and the breaking ball that he's got right now, he could pitch toward the back end of the bullpen. We'll see what opportunities present themselves."
would the Pirates trade Hanrahan if they are not in a playoff contention? can he be a free agent? last year he signed a 1 year $4.1 MIL contract to avoid arbitration.

I dunno about the whole forum, but seems to me like the closer thread has been like this for a long time. Emotions run high I guess when there's a situation with two potential options, and people back the one they think will win out (or already have rostered).
Or we can all focus on trying to be useful and productive, and put our tape measures away. It was that way for a long time. There's no reason the entire bunch needs to be spoiled by a few who can't not get the last word.
Didn't say I was happy about it , just said that the regulation has been less and less in recent years (and understandably so as I'm sure it's very time consuming to monitor). The mods came in on this one and sent some private messages out to stop it, which I think is great.

Before we go overanalyzing this, the Indians had a lefty-heavy lineup against Jered Weaver. Downs coasted through the eighth inning on seven pitches, and Cleveland had a L-S-L-L attack due up in the ninth. Frieri had thrown a lot of pitches over his previous couple of outings. Keeping Downs in was an easy call, and the right one.

I own both potential Minnesota closers, so I feel good about getting a few saves here and there. But I'd be lying if I didn't think each of them was a ticking time bomb at this point.

What impact would this have if he does end up in a Mets uniform? He could grab ninth inning duties?!
