no clue who to grab speculatively and this is from a Padre fan, who told the forum dont bother with Cashner grab Thayer when Street went on the DL
I did.
So should Street get traded I'd go: Thayer - he did quite well as a temporary closer, no reason they won't turn to him again. Gregerson - his Ks are back up after last season, but here's his closing record in the majors: 3/21 in save opps. 18 blown saves. That's 14%. Sorry guy. Boxberger - Definitely the closer of the future, but not this season. Career 4.3 BB/9 in the minors, 9.9 BB/9 thus far this season . Not yet.
The best option is Thayer and I'd bet on him getting the save opps should Street get dealt.
Gregerson's 3/21 in save opps means absolutely nothing. The vast majority of them are from the 7th or 8th inning since he's been a setup man his whole career. Thus, not actual save opportunities, but hold opportunities, of which he's converted 93. He's been better than Thayer this year, and Thayer has been particularly bad in June. The Padres still have a couple more years of control over Gregerson so it would make sense for them to pump up his value by making him their closer. Thayer pretty much has no real life value at all, and a few saves aren't going to change that. We shall see.
I'm not going to bicker over this point as I was simply offering my opinion, but if what you say is true then Gregerson would have received the initial save opps when Street hit the DL as well and Thayer would have merely been an afterthought. So given that Thayer was given the closer role before, and he converted almost all his opps, I see no reason why they wouldn't go with him again and keep Gregerson in that role where he has performed so admirably.

3/21 means nothing but 96/114 means that he blew the lead 18 times. Thats 84,2 % success rate. I looked up some players: Frieri 100% - (small sample size, only 27 situations) Axford 90,6% Nathan 89,7% Rivera 89,4% Valverde 89,4% Kimbrel 88,75 % Papelbon 88,0% K-Rod 87,1% Marmol 86,9% Downs 84,6% F Cordero 84,0% F Francisco 83,3% J Rocker 80,5%
It seems like Gregerson is a Francisco Cordero or Frank Francisco. Not a good option.

His competition is Dale Thayer. It's not like he has to be Mariano Rivera out there, haha. The point is he's the best reliever they have. Thayer had a good month of May but he's back to the old Dale Thayer (the guy that spent 10 seasons in the minors) in June. Gregerson had a rough start to the year and Thayer briefly played above his head, which explains why they used him while Street was on the DL. Odds of him getting the job back are slim. But we'll see.

You could have looked it up, and you would know that Thayer isn't listed because of his small sample size. But if you insist: Thayer 88,9%

Is this what the cafe has turned into? Constant pissing matches that never end. neither of these potential closers is great but this constant you are wrong and you are stupid attitude is not what I expect in here. Yes, we will always disagree and get a little abrasive but there is no reason that it needs to turn into this every single time.

I dunno about the whole forum, but seems to me like the closer thread has been like this for a long time. Emotions run high I guess when there's a situation with two potential options, and people back the one they think will win out (or already have rostered).

Or we can all focus on trying to be useful and productive, and put our tape measures away. It was that way for a long time. There's no reason the entire bunch needs to be spoiled by a few who can't not get the last word.
Probably because Rasmus/Bautista/Encarnacion were due up in the 8th, and presumably the bottom of the order in the 9th. Makes more sense to use your best pitcher against the other teams' best hitters. As opposed to John Farrell who used Toronto's worst pitcher against the Angels' best hitters in the top half of the same inning...
