And that's one of the reasons ERA is a lousy stat. One bad 1/3 of an inning halfway through May and his season ERA goes from 0.00 to 5.23. Clearly this shouldn't rule him out of the closer competition, but then again Hector Freaking Santiago had the role for almost a month so who knows what Ventura will do?

Does anyone still think Frieri is in the mix, or will be soon? Do we just assume it's Downs job now, or that they want Walden back as closer? I still feel like Frieri has the best stuff of all three and could really run with it if given the chance. But does anyone think Scioscia has him in the mix?

I don't know of many stats that eliminate the problem of small sample sizes
ERA takes over 200 innings to stabalize and stop being a small sample, that makes it kind of a tough stat to judge RP by since it takes 3 or 4 full seasons to really mean much.
All this closers misery got so bad, that no one even mentions that H Rodriguez blew his 3rd save opp in 2 weeks and his ERA jumped to 4.70! Yet no one is crying to give the job to Clippard, or Sean Burnett. Interesting
