for what it's worth he has many seasons of closing experience in the minors.
http://www.thebaseballcube.com/players/ ... ale-Thayerminor league totals- 10 years, 2.45 ERA, 1.18 WHIP, 173 saves.
then again shouldn't it mean something that he didn't first reach the majors until he was 28 years old.
He was not good for the Rays when he got a shot in the bigs though. Many Rays fans hoped he would help put because of the experience in the minors, but he seems to be a good AAA player and not an MLB player. Maybe he can turn it around in SD, but I wouldn't bet on it
Cashner has problems with control and the long ball as previously stated.
Gregerson has not been healthy this season (back spasms) and has not pitched well of late.
Thayer's numbers look good so far but an extremely small sample size and he's not a veteran.
That's not an inspiring bunch to choose from.
I'm liking Thayer the most out of the three (and I had the opportunity to add Cashner and passed).
3.11 K/BB in 576 minor league innings.
18/1 K/BB in 30 major league innings.
In 14 innings of NL ball ('11 + '12): 2.51 ERA, 0.91 WHIP, 8 K, 0 BB, 13 H
I know the sample size is small, but he's definitely got the best control out of the three. He's also far less HR prone.
