Dan Haren or Matt Moore?

Postby Beeblebrox » Sun Jan 29, 2012 2:18 pm

Who should I take for my #3 SP in a keeper league?

I'm definitely in a win-now mode....and I've already got Kershaw and Hamels, so neither of them would have to pull the full weight of a staff ace.

I'm going with Haren here. If you truly wish to win now, without any regard to future potential, go with the sure thing. Moore looks to be great, but there is still room for him to need a year of development in the majors, so his numbers could fluctuate. Haren, on the other hand, will get you solid numbers close to what he's done recently. Stick with the vet to win now.

Haren is definitely the safer of the two options, and if you're set to win now, I'd be more comfortable rolling with him than rolling the dice on Moore.

Depends on keeper settings. If you can handle the riskier Moore, it has the potential to pay big dividends down the line. Haren versus Moore for just 2012 is Haren, easily. But you said it was a keeper league, and that has to be a consideration here. If you're keeping both Kershaw and Hamels, you're not asking Moore to be your #1 SP right now.

I will take Moore. I realize that Haren will probably be better this year but Moore looks like he could be one of the best.

We keep 10 each year, with no regard to position. Keepers are unrestricted and unlimited. Potentially, I could have Moore on my roster for the next 15+ years.

I've personally been in the league since '02, so it's a pretty stable league in that sense, although certainly not all the same people are in now as were then.

I won last year, and with 10 keepers from that group, I'm obviously going into this year looking to repeat. I don't have the room to keep either Haren or Moore, so I'm looking to redraft at least one of them by trading for the #1 pick.

The 10 guys I'm planning on keeping are: Pujols, Pedrioa, Zimmerman, Andrus, Kemp, JUpton, Ellsbury, Bruce, Kershaw, Hamels......

....which means I'll be letting Morse, Zobrist, Aramis, Haren, Cain, Moore, Romero, Wainwright, and Aroldis all go back into the draft.

So rather than get nothing for them, I figure I can trade packages of those guys for draft picks and redraft some of the guys I can't outright keep. (Pitching will be more plentiful in the draft, which is why I'm keeping Andrus over any of those SP.)

EDIT - Forgot to include....12 teams, 5x5 scoring.

With that kind of league structure, you've got to find a way to keep Moore. The potential payoff is just too big.
