first year in a 16 team keeper yahoo league. 4 teams were eliminated from last year and 4 new teams get to have an expansion draft picking 10 players from the eliminated teams players. we then get to keep 5 before the season, but can make trades based on the 10 protected players.
there are 12 other teams that currently have a list of 10 protected players. before the season starts everyone will have to set their list of 5 keepers, and then all other players will be available for the yahoo draft.

I imagine in a 16 team league certain positions are more valuable.

I was in your position a few years ago, taking on a new team full of middle round talent. I'd offer the following advice to you:

1) Try to trade multiple pieces for solid keepers. The person who ends up with the better overall player is generally the winner of many trades. Often the pieces you trade away can be replaced on the waiver wire. Also, don't be afraid to ask for ridiculous amounts back in trades. Once you find the idiot who bites, you'll win big. A great time to do this is when a player gets hot to start the year (ie Lance Berkman last year). He was a key part in me getting Robinson Cano and Prince Fielder.

2) Don't worry about selecting closers higher up on this list. Closers are a dime a dozen on the waiver wire during the season.

3) A good bat is always better than a good pitcher in fantasy.

4) As it is a keeper league. Age of the player is huge. Adam Jones above would be a crucial pickup. He hasn't quite figured it all out yet, but with his potential entering prime years he could be in the top few rounds in a couple years.


It'll be hard for you to win this year, unless you get lucky, but if you play your cards right this year, you could field a very competitive team next year.

Essentially, I would target some of the younger, high upside arms (Price, Latos, Gonzalez, Beachy) and hitters (Jones, Cabrera, Santana, McCann). That and go after guys like Shields, who have good trade value and can be moved for other guys.
