Dominican Police: Carmona Using Assumed Name By Ben Nicholson-Smith [January 19 at 2:23pm CST]
Police in the Dominican Republic say Fausto Carmona's real name is Roberto Hernandez Heredia, Enrique Rojas of ESPNDeportes tweets. Dionisio Soldevila of the AP tweets that Carmona is 31, not 28 and Jorge Arangure Jr. of ESPN.com tweets that the right-hander's chances of obtaining a visa quickly don't seem good. Yancen Pujols first tweeted news of the identity issues.
The Indians exercised Carmona's option after the season, so he'll earn $7MM in 2012. The ground ball pitcher posted a 5.25 ERA with 5.2 K/9 and 2.9 BB/9 in 188 2/3 innings in 2011. The Marlins placed Leo Nunez/Juan Carlos Oviedo on the restricted list because of issues related to his assumed name. It's not clear whether Carmona will be able to pitch in the U.S. by Opening Day
why does this take so long to come out? is this because he went back to his home country and maybe hasn't before? if thee players felt like something like this would/could happen, couldn't they just stay in America? or is that an option? wouldn't be surprised if there are multiple other players currently in baseball with names.

Pretty sure that he can only be here while working.

Players can be here year round. They'll find ways to make the proper visa happen. I'm guessing that this became an issue due to a recent identity investigation in the DR. And if the investigation would have happened while he was playing in the US then he would have been deported.
Of course this makes him an easy target for jokes and whatnot, but this is a fantasy baseball website, and I'd like to know what people think the fantasy impact of this arrest is. Personally, it will bump him up a couple rounds for me. I have no interest in an up-and-down 28-year-old who may or may not put it together again, but I think a 31-year-old veteran probably knows a thing or two and can get outs even if his stuff isn't great. I'm on board for 2012.

During an appearance on ESPN's "Outside the Lines" on Friday, Pedro Gomez reported that Fausto Carmona was outed several weeks ago on a popular radio show in Santo Domingo by the mother of the real Fausto Carmona. According to the report, Carmona (aka Roberto Hernandez Heredia) had been paying the family of the real Carmona for the use of his identification and refused to increase payments after the Indians picked up his $7 million club option. The U.S. government subsequently began an investigation following the interview and arrested Heredia when he went to apply for his work visa earlier this week. The Indians have refused comment on the situation, saying only that they are in the process of "still gathering information."
