Nats lock up Gio Gonzalez through 2016

Nationals signed LHP Gio Gonzalez to a five-year contract extension.
The deal runs through 2016 and also contains team options for 2017 and 2018. Gonzalez was eligible for arbitration for the first time this winter as a Super Two qualifier, so the contract buys out at least one year of free agency. It's not clear at this point how much the deal is worth. Gonzalez, 26, boasts a 3.17 ERA and 184 strikeouts per year since the start of the 2010 season. He was acquired by the Nationals last month for a package of prospects.

I am thinking they make a serious World Series run in 2014. Especially if they sign Fielder, which looks likely.

That is one hell of a deal. Strasburg, Zimmerman, and Gio could be arguably the best 1-2-3 in a year or two.

From the looks of things now, I would imagine they have a good chance at grabbing a wild card spot as is. If they add Fielder, even more so. The Nats have done a great job. Come 2014, they could be on top of that division and for a while..

Very true. If Bryce Harper turns out to be everything he is supposed to be then that team is gonna be scary. Michael Morse is a great power hitting first baseman even if they don't get Fielder.

Correct. Morse played 1B last season because LaRoche was injured.

This is a heck of a deal for the Nats. They bought out his arbitration years and two years of free agency. He could make up to $65MM if they pick up his two option years.
